FIFA World Cup 2014 – Semi-finals predictions

We are down to the final 4, and once again I had a 75% success in my predictions. Let’s see how I do now…

Brazil vs Germany

The local team is devastated after having lost its biggest star to a bad injury in the previous game. On top of that, they will be also missing their captain, who picked up a second yellow after one of the most stupid plays I remember at a World Cup. Still, I do expect them to prevail against this efficient but very boring German side, that has struggled to score in spite of playing against inferior teams like USA and Algeria. The crowd will play a big role, and the refereeing… well, they got the same guy who did not see Suárez bite his Italian opponent, so you get the idea.

Advancing to the Final: Brazil (in 90 min)

Argentina vs Netherlands

Argentina seems to have finally found its form, and at what appropriate time. I do expect them to go through semi-finals, even though they will play against a very well organized team, with big stars who are at the top of their form. Like we say in Argentina, it’s ‘Glory or Devoto’ for Messi at this point (Devoto is a jail in the city of Buenos Aires) :-)

Brasil vs Alemania

Los locales están devastados luego de perder a su máxima estrella debido a una lesión en el partido anterior. Encima, se quedaron sin su capitán, que se llevó una segunda amarilla en una de las jugadas más estúpidas que recuerde en un Mundial. De todos modos me da la impresión de que vencerán a este eficiente pero muy aburrido equipo alemán, que ha tenido problemas para anotar a pesar de haber jugado con equipos inferiores como USA o Argelia. La hinchada va a tener un rol importante, y el arbitraje… bueno, digamos que es el mismo tipo que no vió el mordiscón de Suárez, así que nos damos una idea.

Argentina vs Holanda

Argentina parece haberse re-encontrado con su juego, y bien a tiempo. Estoy esperando que pasen a la final, a pesar de que en frente van a tener a un equipo muy bien organizado, con estrellas grandes que están en un gran momento. Como decimos en Argentina, para Messi este partido será ‘La gloria o Devoto’ (Devoto es una cárcel en la ciudad de Buenos Aires) :-)

FIFA World Cup – Quarterfinals predictions

Again I had three out of four right with my Round of 16 predictions, for a grand total of 6 out of 8. Not bad! I was also right about the fact that Switzerland and USA were going to be big challengers, and boy were they (though USA mostly survived on their goalkeeper’s incredible performance).

Now let’s pick the final four!

France vs Germany

Tough one here. France has been one of the best teams so far, but they have Germany in front of them. I would say that this time skill will prevail over strength (and history) and I will give my nod to the Frenchmen. But it won’t be easy!

Brazil vs Colombia

Another tough one. Colombia has been far better than the host, and in normal conditions they shouldn’t have any problems taking them down and advancing to the semis. But… these are not normal conditions. Unfortunately, I do see this wonderful team caving under pressure and as much as I love how they played so far, and the fact that they have the best coach in this World Cup, I expect some more magic coming out of Neymar’s feet. But James Rodriguez, you will be a huge star, kid

Argentina vs Belgium

I can’t be objective on this one. I fully expect Argentina finally getting their sh*t together and playing the way they should. This time, it will be Di Maria and –I certainly hope– Higuaín who will come to the rescue. Argentina has to prevail here. But Sabella better looks who he puts in the back! The defence –except for Rojo– has been very shaky, and Gago hasn’t helped much. Maybe putting Biglia x Gago and perhaps Demichelis or Campagnaro for Fernández? Too bad Rojo can’t play, he’s been the best player so far along with Messi

Netherlands vs Costa Rica

Let’s put it this way. I just hope the Costa Rican’s dream continues all the way to the final four, but… it won’t happen. It’s been an incredible ride, though. I will be very surprised if we get past the 90th minute mark here.

Nuevamente emboqué tres de cuatro con mis predicciones de octavos de final, por un gran total de 6 de 8. Nada mal! También acerté sobre el hecho de que Suiza y USA no iban a caer fácilmente, y bien que dieron trabajo (aunque USA sobrevivió más que nada por la increíble performance de su arquero).

Ahora a elegir los semifinalistas!

Francia vs Alemania

Esta está difícil. Francia fue uno de los mejores equipos hasta ahora, pero en frente tienen a los alemanes. Diré que esta vez la calidad va a prevalecer por sobre el poderío (y la historia) y les daré mi voto de confianza a los franceses. Pero no va a ser nada fácil!

Brasil vs Colombia

Otro difícil. Colombia ha sido mucho mejor que los anfitriones, y en condiciones normales no debieran tener problemas en sacárselos de encima y llegar a las semifinales. Pero… estas no son condiciones normales. Lamentablemente sí veo a este fantástico equipo ceder ante la presión, y por más que me ha encantado como juegan y el hecho de que tienen al mejor técnico del Mundial, estoy esperando más magia que provenga de los pies de Neymar. Pero James Rodriguez, vas a ser una estrella gigante, pibe.

Argentina vs Bélgica

No puedo ser objectivo aquí. Estoy esperando que Argentina por fin se saque toda esa m****a de encima y comience a jugar como debiera. Esta vez será Di María y –espero– Higuaín los que salgan al rescate. Argentina tiene que ganar. Sabella deberia analizar a quién poner en la defensa! Han sido –con excepción de Rojo– muy irregulares, y Gago no ha ayudado mucho tampoco. Tal vez poner a Biglia x Gago e incluso a Demichelis o Campagnaro por Fernandez y reorganizar un poco allí? Qué pena que Rojo no pueda jugar, ha sido el mejor hasta ahora junto con Messi.

Holanda vs Costa Rica

Pongámoslo de esta manera: yo quisiera que el sueño costarricense continúe hasta las semifinales, pero… eso no va a ocurrir. Ha sido una campaña fantástica, de todos modos. Pero me voy a sorprender si pasamos de los 90 minutos en este partido.
