But I gottta admit… it’s kind of funny. Well, unless you’re that Turkish player who got the red card!

This game is for the Brazilian Serie D and featured Aparecidense (from Goiás) and Tupi (from Minas Gerais). I believe it was a quarterfinal match between these two teams, and the score (2-2) was favouring Aparecidense because of the ‘away goal’ rule. With just one minute to go, Tupi was charging and charging and it seemed that they would finally get the goal they needed… only that Aparecidense’s masseur Romildo Fonseca da Silva just happened to be standing by the net… and made the two amazing saves you see on the video.
The funny thing is that –as per the FIFA rules– since the ball didn’t go in… it was not a goal, so the game ended tied and Aparecidense advanced!!! The Tupi players must still be looking for that elusive masseur (just watch him run!)
Este partido es por la Serie D de Brasil y lo jugaron Aparecidense de Goiás y Tupi de Minas Gerais. Creo que era un partido de cuartos de final entre estos dos equipos, y el resultado (2-2) favorecía a Aparecidense por el tema de los goles de visitante. Con sólo un minuto para terminar, pareció que Tupi iba a tener el premio merecido por tanta insistencia y por fin anotar el gol tan necesitado… pero justo apareció el masajista de Tupi, un tal Romildo Fonseca da Silva, que andaba por ahí y se despachó con las dos salvadas que pueden ver.
Lo gracioso del asunto es que –de acuerdo con las normas FIFA– de momento en que la bola no entró… no fue gol, así que el partido terminó 2-2 y Aparecidense pasó a semifinales!!! Los jugadores de Tupi todavía lo andan buscando a Romildo (vieron cómo corría?
The action comes from last weekend’s Mexican League final game, between Club America and Cruz Azul. America had lost the first leg 1-0, and things weren’t looking good for the home team in the second game, as they were down 0-1 in 20’, and with 10 men thanks to an early red card.
With just a minute to go, Mosquera tied the game for America and gave the team a very, very faint hope. There were only, let’s say, two or three minutes left. The home team got a corner kick, and that was definitely going to be the last play of the match. Keeper Moises Muñoz (who not long ago had barely saved his life after a bad car accident) decided to go for it… and this happened:
America then went on to win the match (and hence its 11th title) on shootout (with Muñoz stopping a shot himself).

This is from a game between Flamengo and Vasco Da Gama, both teams from Rio (Brazil). Deivid (Flamengo) found himself with the ball, 1 yard away from the net and… well, you just gotta see it.

Watch this scene from Argentina’s “Torneo Argentino C” (something like our fifth division). San Lorenzo of Sáenz Peña (Province of Chaco) was playing against Libertad of Charata (also from Chaco). The game was 3-1 for the visiting Libertad, when forward Walter Gorosito found himself in front of the keeper. He took a shot, that hit the crossbar and went up.
The ball hit the branches of a tree near the field and fell back in the eighteen yards. Defender Marcelo Escobar took it and put it on the ground to take the corresponding goal kick.
But referee Juan Mancuello had followed the ball and interpreted that it had never gone past the goal line so the ball was still in play. He called for a penalty kick!!! There was no way San Lorenzo players could make him change his mind.
Matías Flores took the PK and put the 4-1 for Libertad. The game ended 5-2 but who cares, right. That fourth goal was worth the admission price!!! :-)

Miren esta escena del Torneo Argentino C de Argentina (algo así como nuestra quinta división). San Lorenzo of Sáenz Peña (Provincia de Chaco) jugaba contra Libertad of Charata (también de Chaco). El partido iba 3-1 para la visita Libertad, cuando el delantero Walter Gorosito se encontró delante del arquero y sacó un furibundo disparo que se estrelló contra el travesaño y salió para arriba.
La pelota dio contra las ramas de un árbol cerca de la cancha y volvió a caer en el área. El defensor Marcelo Escobar la tomó y la puso en su lugar para efectuar el correspondiente saque de arco…
Pero el referí Mancuello había seguido la jugada e interpretó que la pelota nunca había salido, por lo que aún estaba en juego. Por lo tanto, dio penal para Libertad!!! No hubo forma de que los jugadores de San Lorenzo lo hicieran cambiar de opinión.
Matías Flores ejecutó el penal y puso el 4-1 para Libertad. El partido terminó 5-2, pero a quién le importa, no? Ese cuarto gol justificó el precio de la entrada!!! :-)

Jorge Troitero used to play with Lionel Messi at La Masía, a club that has been providing Barcelona with great players throughout the years. He is a player with very good skills, and who is currently playing for Burgos, in the Spanish Second Division.
A few months back, Troitero was responsible for this amazing goal, in the 1-1 tie against Tordesillas. He faked and faked, until he sent the entire defense the other way and then could finish with ease, between the keeper’s legs. What a ‘golazo’!

Hace un par de meses, Troirero armó este jugadón para el 1-1 contra el Tordesillas. Enganchó y enganchó, hasta que en un amague hizo pasar de largo a toda la defensa rival y luego definió tranquilo, por entre las piernas del arquero. Un golazo de aquellos!
Though I like to score goals (who doesn’t!) I have always felt comfortable playing in defence. Particularly, as a left or right back; I’m a lefty, but I’m mostly ambidextrous for everything, including soccer; don’t ask me if I’m good, though!.
One of my favourite Argentine soccer players from the 80’s was a short, hard working defender named Jorge Gordillo, who played for soccer ‘big guy’ River Plate for most of his career (I remember a stint in San Lorenzo as well). I watched his very first game on TV, back in 1981, and I will never forget it. I don’t think Gordillo will either.
In one of his first actions during that game, the poor guy tried to pass the ball back to his keeper (one of the greatest in history, Ubaldo Matildo Fillol). He put the ball in the top corner, scoring one of the best looking, most heart breaking own goals I had ever seen…
I could never find any videos of it, though, but this week I got to watch a very similar one. It was during an Argentine Second Division game between Instituto (from Córdoba) and CAI (from the Southern city of Comodoro Rivadavia). Just watch and smile (or feel bad for the poor guy).
Si bien a mí me gusta hacer goles (a quién no!), me he sentido más cómodo jugando en defensa. Particularmente, como lateral, ya sea por izquierda o derecha. Si bien soy ‘oficialmente’ zurdo, soy prácticamente ambidiestro para todo. Eso no quiere decir que sea bueno, por supuesto!
Uno de mis jugadores favoritos del fútbol argentino de los 80’s era un defensor petiso y aguerrido llamado Jorge Gordillo, que jugó para Rivert Plate la mayoría de su carrera (recuerdo un paso breve por San Lorenzo). En una de sus primeras acciones en ese partido, el pobre Gordillo trató de pasarle la pelota a su arquero (uno de los mejores de la historia, el gran Ubaldo Matildo Fillol). Puso la pelota en el ángulo superior izquierdo, en lo que fue uno de los más lindos y más tristes goles que yo haya visto…
Nunca pude encontrar videos de ese gol, pero esta semana pude ver uno muy similar. Fue en un partido de la Segunda División de Argentina entre Instituto (de Córdoba) y el CAI (de la sureña ciudad de Comodoro Rivadavia). Miren y sonrían (siéntanse mal por el pobre hombre).
Joonas Jokinen is a 16 year old Finnish kid who plays in the youth division of Swiss side FC Baar. They had a league game against FC Sempach last week, in which Baar was awarded a penalty kick.
And Jokinen was, of course, in charge of taking it, which is why he’s featured here!

They say that my hometown (Necochea, ARG) is very windy; it’s kind of a myth, you would say. I remember how they had to cancelled every race of the South American Windsurf Tournament years ago, because there was absolutely no air flowing, but well…
Another myth –probably more accurate– refers to the south of my home country (Patagonia) as being very windy, and they mention how big of a role the wind plays in the games that CAI (a second division team from Comodoro Rivadavia, Chubut), plays at home. I can’t see how the wind would benefit just one team, though. I remember a tournament that Santi went to play last year, where the wind was so strong that the ball would never go past the first 1/3 of the field (unless they were passing at ground level). The funny thing is that such game ended 1-1, with both goals scored on the net that was against the wind (a counter attack and a penalty kick)!
Now look at this video from a game between German teams TSV Wimsheim and TSV Grunbach, and watch what happens when the poor defenseman from the visiting team attempts to take a goal kick…

Yo no sé cómo se puede decir que el viento beneficie a un sólo equipo, a menos que rote cada 45 minutos! Eso sí, recuerdo un torneo que Santi jugó el año pasado, donde el viento era tan fuerte que no se podía sacar la pelota más alla de unos cinco metros después del área grande (a menos que la llevaran al pie). Lo interesante es que ese partido terminó 1-1, y los dos goles fueron hechos ‘viento arriba’ (un contraataque y un penal)!
Ahora miren este video de un partido de las divisiones menores de Alemania, entre el TSV Wimsheim y TSV Grunbach, y miren lo que pasa cuando el pobre defensor visitante quiere hacer un saque de arco…
People, meet Jay Coble, a student at Virginia Wesleyan College.The 6-foot-2, 180 pounds gentleman from Portsmouth, Virginia has been playing soccer since high school and is now part of Wesleyan’s soccer team, the Marlins. I read somewhere that he’s also pretty good in American football (as a kicker), but that wouldn’t be the reason for him to be featured here!
It seems that Mr. Coble had a pretty good run with his high school team (Churchland), with performances like the one you will see in the video below. At first, I thought that the Youtube video shows a stellar performance by Coble, but once I started to read the comments, I started having second thoughts.
Some of Coble’s saves are just plain amazing, almost miraculous. But there’s also the fact that he rarely seems to be able to hold the ball. So… while he obviously has amazing reflexes, maybe he should work more on his ability to stop the ball rather than give a rebound every single time.
The question I leave for you is the one that this post has for a title: ‘Awesome keeper or butter fingers?’
Meanwhile, a brief comment about his team’s defence: start looking into a different sport, guys. Soccer is not for you. :-)

Les presento a Jay Coble, estudiante de Virginia Wesleyan College.Este muchacho de casi 1.88m y 82 kg de peso nacido en Portsmouth, Virginia ha venido jugando al fútbol desde el high school y ahora juega para el equipo de Wesleyan, los Marlins. Leí por ahí que también es bastante bueno como pateador en el fútbol americano, pero eso de ninguna manera lo hubiera depositado en este blog!
Parece que el Sr. Coble anduvo bastante bien en su equipo de high school (Churchland), con performances como la que pueden ver en el video de arriba. Cuando lo vi por primera vez en Youtube pensé que era una actuación descomunal la de Coble, pero una vez que comencé a leer los comentarios dejados allí, tuve algunas dudas.
Algunas de sus salvadas son fantásticas, casi milagrosas. Pero también tenemos el hecho de que nunca parece ser capaz de retener el balón. Así que… si bien obviamente tiene unos reflejos increíbles, tal vez debiera trabajar un poquito más en la seguridad de sus manos así no da rebote todo el tiempo.
La pregunta que les dejo es la que este post tiene por título: ‘Un arquero de aquellos o un manos de manteca?’
Mientras tanto, un comentario acerca de la defensa de su equipo: dedíquense a otra cosa, muchachos! :-)

Watch this video of a game played last weekend. Apparently, #10 in the green jersey loses his cool and knees a guy in the groin, a despicable action for which he is given (justifiably) a red card.
Nothing out of the ordinary there, except for the fact that ‘#10 in the green jersey’ is Evo Morales, President of Bolivia!!! Like Argentina’s Carlos Menem in the ‘90s, this guy thinks that putting on his shorts and prancing around won’t turn him into the laughingstock of his entire country. Big mistake. But unlike ‘Carlitos’, Evo has something playing against him: internet.
Finding a video of that game in which Menem played (so to speak) for Argentina’s national team is almost impossible, as it happened around 1991, so few people will be able to laugh at the minuscule former president, his incredibly skinny legs and his total lack of talent for the sport (he was good at basketball, though).
But look what happened to ‘poor’ Evo. He thought he could play soccer, got mad, kicked a guy and was sent off, becoming an internet star in the process (but for the wrong reasons). Now we know that not only he’s a joke as a politician, he also stinks as a soccer player.
And let’s not even start talking about the example he’s setting!
Sigh. First Castro says his own model doesn’t work for his own country; then ‘democratic’ president Chavez loses the elections (but refuses to accept it), and now this… tough times for Latin American left-wingers! :-P

Miren este video de un partido jugado la semana pasada. El 10 de verde se calienta y le pega un rodillazo en los huevos a un tipo, una acción execrable por la que le sacan (con justicia) la tarjeta roja.
Nada fuera de lo ordinario allí, excepto por el hecho de que ‘el 10 de verde’ es Evo Morales, Presidente de Bolivia!!! Como alguna vez hiciera Carlos Menem en la Argentina de los ‘90s, este buen hombre cree que ponerse los shorcitos y corretear por la cancha no va a convertirlo en el hazmerreír de su país. Craso error. Pero aún peor, a diferencia de ‘Carlitos futbolista’, Evo tiene otro enemigo jugando en su contra: internet.
Encontrar un video que muestre a Menem jugando (bueno, es una forma de decir) para la selección argentina es casi imposible, ya que ocurrió por 1991, así que pocos van a poder reírse del diminuto ex-presidente, sus piernas flacas y su total falta de talento para ese deporte (era bueno para el basketball, sin embargo).
Pero miren lo que le pasa al ‘pobre’ Evo. Pensó que podía jugar al fútbol, se enojó, le pegó a otro y lo echaron, convirtiéndose sin querer en una estrella de internet en el proceso. Ahora todos podemos observar que no sólo es una joda como político, sino que también apesta como deportista.
Y no nos detengamos a debatir acerca del ejemplo que está dando!
Primero Castro sale a decir que su propio modelo no sirve para su país, luego el ‘democrático’ presidente Chávez pierde las elecciones (algo que jamás aceptará), y ahora esto… qué tiempos difíciles para la izquierda latinoamericana! :-P
Khalid Askri is a 29 year old gentleman who plays for the FAR Rabat in Morocco. He has played his entire career for the same club, actually, always in net.
He achieved ‘internet celebrity’ status a few days ago, when a video surfaced showing him making a spectacular save off a PK, then turn around and celebrate with the crowd… while the ball, still spinning, went into the net! That was funny enough; but then, just a week later, he was involved in yet another incident. He received a pass from a defender, tried to control and then kick the ball, only for it to find a forward’s foot on its way and get sent into the net again.
I would say that though the first one was incredible, the second one was a very common mistake; I’ve seem many, many keepers make similar plays. But Askri found a way to make his second blooper memorable: he took off his shirt and ran, quitting the game. Some even say he quit soccer altogether! I don’t want him to quit… I want to see what he’s going to do next!
My respects for Khalid Askri, the bestworst most enterntaining keeper in the world. Special mention for the play-by-play guy of the second goal and his ‘Oy, oy, oy’.

Askri alcanzó status de ‘celebridad de internet’ hace unos días, cuando apareció un video mostrando cómo atajaba un penal de manera espectacular, se daba vuelta para celebrar con la tribuna… mientras la pelota, aún girando, se metía en el arco! Como si eso no hubiese sido suficiente, a los pocos días se vio envuelto en otro incidente. Recibió un pase de un defensor, controló y luego pateó la pelota, con tanta suerte que se encontró con el botín de un delantero que la desvió y metió en el arco.
Diría que si bien el primer gol fue increíble, el segundo fue el producto de un error muy común; he visto muchos, muchísimos arqueros mandarse cagadas similares. Pero Askri le encontró la vuelta a la suya para que su segundo blooper también fuera memorable: se sacó la camiseta y comenzó a correr, abandonando el partido. Algunos incluso dicen que largó el fútbol! Yo no quiero que deje… quiero ver qué va a hacer la próxima vez!
Vayan mis respetos para Khalid Askri, el mejorpeor más entretenido arquero del mundo. Mención honorífica para el relator (en árabe) del segundo gol y su ‘Oy, oy, oy’…

Here's a very funny video from the Arab League, which I found in Clarin newspaper. You can see two players fighting for the ball, and in my opinion the blue player wins the position cleanly... and the white player gets cleaner as well! :-)))
I was surprised to see that the white guy got away with just a yellow card for his reaction. Granted, the blue guy fell as if he had been hit by a missile, but still...

He aquí un muy divertido video de un partido de la liga árabe, que encontré en Clarín. En él se ve a dos jugadores peleando por la pelota, y a mi modo de ver el jugador de camiseta azul gana limpiamente... y el jugador blanco queda aún más limpio! :-)))
Me sorprendió ver cómo el jugador de blanco zafó con sólo una tarjeta amarilla por su reacción. Está bien que el otro se tiró como si lo hubieran ametrallado, pero igual...
My friend Mike posted something today on his Twitter page, reflecting a comment made by recognized Argentine journalist Daniel Arcucci that I liked: there have been two Chelsea players who got injured within the last two days (Drogba and Mikel) and will very likely miss the World Cup (there is still some hope for Drogba, it seems). Not surprisingly, these are the stars of their teams (Ivory Coast and Nigeria, respectively).
But there were more! Before this happened, Bosingwa (Portugal), Essien (Ghana) and Ballack (Germany) also got injured and will miss the World Cup. And they all play for Chelsea as well!
So, a few questions here. Can you answer any for me?
1) Is this a consequence of the very demanding schedule these players have, with their EPL, UEFA and National Team games?
2) Are we talking, like Mike and Daniel said, about a ‘curse’ ? :-)
3) Was Maradona smart not to plan any friendly games while waiting for their first match against Nigeria? (I know, putting Maradona and smart in the same sentence is very close to an oxymoron)
In the meantime, some friendly matches that made me wish I hadn’t posted my predictions for Group “A” and “E” already. Right now, I would choose Uruguay and South Africa to advance for Group “A” and Germany and Cameroon for Group “E”, but it is too late…
Mi amigo Mike puso algo hoy en su Twitter que había publicado el reconocido periodista Daniel Arcucci y que me interesó- hay dos jugadores del Chelsea que se lesionaron en los últimos dos días (Drogba and Mikel) y por lo tanto se van a perder el Mundial (aunque parece que aún hay esperanzas para Drogba). No es sorpresa el hecho de que que ambos sean las figuras de sus equipos (Costa de Marfil y Nigeria, respectivamente) teniendo en cuenta dónde juegan.
Pero no son los únicos! Antes de que esto pasara, Bosingwa (Portugal), Essien (Ghana) y Ballack (Alemania) también tuvieron lesiones que los marginaron del Mundial. Y todos juegan para el Chelsea!
Tengo algunas preguntillas, a ver quién me ayuda con ellas:
1) Será esto una consecuencia directa de un fixture muy exigente, con tantos partidos por la Premier League, UEFA y seleccionados nacionales?
2) Estaremos hablando, como dicen el benemérito y Arcucci, de una maldición? Traigan una bruja! :-)
3) Maradona fue inteligente al no programar amistosos hasta el primer partido con Nigeria? (Ya sé, escribir Maradona e inteligente en la misma oración es un oximorón)
Mientras tanto, los resultados de algunos amistosos me hacen desear no haber publicado los pronósticos del Grupo “A” y el Grupo “B”. En este momento me quedaría con Uruguay y Sud Africa para pasar en el “A” y Alemania y Camerún en el “E”, pero ya es muy tarde…

Though I like to score goals (who doesn’t!) I have always felt comfortable playing in defence. Particularly, as a left or right back; I’m a lefty, but I’m mostly ambidextrous for everything, including soccer; don’t ask me if I’m good, though!.
