FIFA World Cup 2014 – Analyzing Group “E”

Group “E” is –a priori–  one of the easiest to predict, as it features two very strong European teams (France and Switzerland) and two seemingly weaker team from the Americas (Ecuador and Honduras). France looks very strong coming to the World Cup, even without Ribéry, and it should not have any problems picking up the necessary points to win the group.

I don’t see Honduras making out of the bottom of this group, unless they pick up a point against Ecuador and they come in 3rd by goal difference, but other than that… This leaves the before mentioned Ecuadorian side and the Swiss. I think Switzerland should not have any problems beating Ecuador, which did a very good job in the toughest Qualifying Round in the world.

I think it’s possible to have Switzerland and France tied with 7 points each at the end of the group stage, but I will give the French the first position, again on goal difference. Ecuador should pick up the third spot and go home satisfied, as they have done a great job so far.

Me parece que el Grupo  “E” es –a priori–  uno de los más fáciles de predecir, ya que tiene dos equipos europeos muy fuertes (Francia y Suiza) y dos de América que parecen más débiles (Ecuador y Honduras). Francia está en muy buena forma para este Mundial, incluso sin Ribéry, y no debiera tener problemas para llevarse los puntos necesarios para ganar el grupo.

No veo para Honduras otro destino que el de ser último, a menos que le roben un puntito a Ecuador y terminen terceros por diferencia de gol, pero si no es eso… Así nos quedan los ecuatorianos y los suizos. Creo que Suiza no va a tener inconvenientes con Ecuador, que sin embargo cumplió un muy buen papel en las Eliminatorias más difíciles del mundo.

Creo que es posible que Suiza y Francia terminen empatados en 7 puntos al final de la fase de grupos, pero le voy a dar el primer puesto a Francia, de nuevo por diferencia de gol. Ecuador se debería llevar el tercer puesto e irse contento a casa, porque están haciendo las cosas muy bien.

FIFA World Cup 2014 – Analyzing Group “D”

Welcome to the first ‘Group of Death’! This is a great one, featuring three former world champions. Of them, I see England as being the one taking an early ticket back home; you know that getting rid of Italy or Uruguay during group stage is virtually impossible.

England doesn’t seem to have that presence or that greatness that is required to advance in such a tough group, hence my pick. Oh, and poor Costa Rica.

So here are my predictions:

Bienvenidos al primer ‘Grupo de la Muerte’! Este está buenísimo, y tiene tres ex-campeones del mundo. De entre ellos, veo a Inglaterra como el que se va a tener que tomar el avión antes de tiempo; sabemos que sacarse de encima a Italia o a Uruguay en fase de grupos es prácticamente imposible.

Inglaterra no parece tener la presencia, la solidez o la grandeza requerida para avanzar en un grupo tan duro, de ahí mi pronóstico. Ah, otra cosa: pobre Costa Rica…

FIFA World Cup 2014 – Analyzing Group “C”

Group C is an interesting one, as the four teams are pretty much at the same level in terms of possibilities. You would have thought Colombia had all the chances of winning the group, but having lost Radamel Falcao to an injury will definitely hurt their chances.

Japan is doing better year after year, so I will not be surprised if they win this group to advance. I will still keep Colombia in second place, barely edging an always tough Ivory Coast team. I don’t see Greece doing well at all this World Cup. They always under perform, for whatever reason.

So here are my predictions:

El Grupo C está interesante, ya que me da la impresión de que los cuatro equipos están en un nivel similar. Uno pensaría que Colombia tendría todas las chances de llevarse el grupo, pero el perder a Radamel Falcao debido a su lesión va a afectar sus chances, definitivamente.

Japón mejora y mejora, así que no me va a extrañar si terminan ganando el grupo y pasando a octavos. Sigo dejando a Colombia en el segundo puesto, apenas superando al siempre duro Costa de Marfil. No le veo chances a este equipo griego en el Mundial. Grecia siempre desilusiona en estas competencias, quién sabe por qué.

FIFA World Cup 2014 – Analyzing Group “B”

Group B has all the necessary to be the one getting the ‘Group of Death’ moniker. It features powerhouses Spain and Netherlands, but also Chile –which I think it might be the strongest South American team- and Australia.

Predicting an outcome from this group is a very hard task, and I am going to take a very brave stand here. I see Netherlands as the best squad here, so I will give them the nod and will put them as winning the group. The second place should go either to Spain or Chile, and here’s when I make the bold prediction: I see Chile taking the spot and sending Spain home, along with Australia, a sad exit for the strong but aging squad that won the title four years ago.

In summary, this is what I have:

El Grupo B tiene todo lo necesario para ser el que reciba el apodo de ‘Grupo de la Muerte’. Tiene a dos potencias, España y Holanda, pero también a Chile –que yo considero tal vez el mejor equipo sudamericano ahora- y Australia.

Predecir el resultado de este grupo es una muy difícil tarea, y yo voy a tomar una posición valiente aquí. Veo a Holanda como el equipo más poderoso, así que los voy a poner como ganadores del grupo. El segundo puesto debiera ir a España o Chile, y aquí es donde me pongo completamente loco: veo a los chilenos tomando ese lugar y mandando a España a casa en primera ronda, junto con los australianos, una penosa salida para un equipo poderoso pero que está envejeciendo y tiene la base del plantel que ganó el título hace cuatro años.

FIFA World Cup 2014 – Analyzing Group “A”

As promised, I will start looking at the eight groups of this World Cup that will begin in just a week. Group A features the host, Brazil, along with Cameroon, Croatia and Mexico. I think this is one of the easiest to predict, in terms of outcome, at least from the ‘who’s winning this group’ point of view.

Brazil should not have any problems taking the 1st position. This will mostly depend on how they fare in the first game, the Cup opener vs Croatia. If they pick up a win, as they should, they will definitely take the group. In my opinion, the second position will be up for grabs, and it should be going to the European team. Cameroon could get the steal, but it will likely not happen.

Mexico doesn’t have a chance here. They made the World Cup thanks to a couple of very late goals by USA vs Panama, and only after they had to go to a playoff against New Zealand. Their best player refuses to play for the National Team, which leaves Mexico with a below average roster, that definitely won’t go far.

So, my prediction for this group is:

Como prometí, comienzo a mirar los ocho grupos de este Mundial que comienza en sólo una semana. En el Grupo A aparece el anfitrión, Brasil, junto a Camerún, Croacia y México. Creo que este grupo es uno de los más fáciles de predecir, en cuanto al resultado, por lo menos desde el punto de vista de quién va a ganarlo.

Brazil no debiera tener problemas en llevarse el primer lugar. Todo va a depender en gran parte de cómo les vaya en el primer partido, cuando abran el torneo frente a Croacia. Si ganan, como debieran, sin dudas se llevarán el grupo. En mi opinión, la pelea va a ser por el segundo lugar, y los europeos deberían quedarse con ese premio. Camerún puede llegar a complicarles las cosas, pero no creo que eso pase.

Mexico no tiene chances. Entraron al Mundial de casualidad, gracias a los tardíos goles de EEUU contra Panamá, y luego debieron jugar un playoff contra los All White de Nueva Zelandia. Su mejor jugador se niega sistemáticamente a jugar para la selección, lo que deja a México con un plantel sin jerarquía que no va a llegar muy lejos.

Por lo tanto, mi predicción para este grupo es
