Aren’t you supposed to do that AFTER you score?

I wonder who they gave this goal to…
They say that my hometown (Necochea, ARG) is very windy; it’s kind of a myth, you would say. I remember how they had to cancelled every race of the South American Windsurf Tournament years ago, because there was absolutely no air flowing, but well…
Another myth –probably more accurate– refers to the south of my home country (Patagonia) as being very windy, and they mention how big of a role the wind plays in the games that CAI (a second division team from Comodoro Rivadavia, Chubut), plays at home. I can’t see how the wind would benefit just one team, though. I remember a tournament that Santi went to play last year, where the wind was so strong that the ball would never go past the first 1/3 of the field (unless they were passing at ground level). The funny thing is that such game ended 1-1, with both goals scored on the net that was against the wind (a counter attack and a penalty kick)!
Now look at this video from a game between German teams TSV Wimsheim and TSV Grunbach, and watch what happens when the poor defenseman from the visiting team attempts to take a goal kick…

Awesome keeper or butter fingers?
People, meet Jay Coble, a student at Virginia Wesleyan College. The 6-foot-2, 180 pounds gentleman from Portsmouth, Virginia has been playing soccer since high school and is now part of Wesleyan’s soccer team, the Marlins. I read somewhere that he’s also pretty good in American football (as a kicker), but that wouldn’t be the reason for him to be featured here!
It seems that Mr. Coble had a pretty good run with his high school team (Churchland), with performances like the one you will see in the video below. At first, I thought that the Youtube video shows a stellar performance by Coble, but once I started to read the comments, I started having second thoughts.
Some of Coble’s saves are just plain amazing, almost miraculous. But there’s also the fact that he rarely seems to be able to hold the ball. So… while he obviously has amazing reflexes, maybe he should work more on his ability to stop the ball rather than give a rebound every single time.
The question I leave for you is the one that this post has for a title: ‘Awesome keeper or butter fingers?’
Meanwhile, a brief comment about his team’s defence: start looking into a different sport, guys. Soccer is not for you. :-)
Thank you to Justin Ferreira, who posted this video on Facebook…
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Evo Morales, a winner on and off the field
Watch this video of a game played last weekend. Apparently, #10 in the green jersey loses his cool and knees a guy in the groin, a despicable action for which he is given (justifiably) a red card.
Nothing out of the ordinary there, except for the fact that ‘#10 in the green jersey’ is Evo Morales, President of Bolivia!!! Like Argentina’s Carlos Menem in the ‘90s, this guy thinks that putting on his shorts and prancing around won’t turn him into the laughingstock of his entire country. Big mistake. But unlike ‘Carlitos’, Evo has something playing against him: internet.
Finding a video of that game in which Menem played (so to speak) for Argentina’s national team is almost impossible, as it happened around 1991, so few people will be able to laugh at the minuscule former president, his incredibly skinny legs and his total lack of talent for the sport (he was good at basketball, though).
But look what happened to ‘poor’ Evo. He thought he could play soccer, got mad, kicked a guy and was sent off, becoming an internet star in the process (but for the wrong reasons). Now we know that not only he’s a joke as a politician, he also stinks as a soccer player.
And let’s not even start talking about the example he’s setting!
Sigh. First Castro says his own model doesn’t work for his own country; then ‘democratic’ president Chavez loses the elections (but refuses to accept it), and now this… tough times for Latin American left-wingers! :-P
Not sure about the music they chose for this video…

Khalid Askri, the best / worst keeper in the world
Khalid Askri is a 29 year old gentleman who plays for the FAR Rabat in Morocco. He has played his entire career for the same club, actually, always in net.
He achieved ‘internet celebrity’ status a few days ago, when a video surfaced showing him making a spectacular save off a PK, then turn around and celebrate with the crowd… while the ball, still spinning, went into the net! That was funny enough; but then, just a week later, he was involved in yet another incident. He received a pass from a defender, tried to control and then kick the ball, only for it to find a forward’s foot on its way and get sent into the net again.
I would say that though the first one was incredible, the second one was a very common mistake; I’ve seem many, many keepers make similar plays. But Askri found a way to make his second blooper memorable: he took off his shirt and ran, quitting the game. Some even say he quit soccer altogether! I don’t want him to quit… I want to see what he’s going to do next!
My respects for Khalid Askri, the best worst most enterntaining keeper in the world. Special mention for the play-by-play guy of the second goal and his ‘Oy, oy, oy’.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Splash!
Oh, what, you thought this blog was history already? No, not at all... OK, at least not for now. :-)
Here's a very funny video from the Arab League, which I found in Clarin newspaper. You can see two players fighting for the ball, and in my opinion the blue player wins the position cleanly... and the white player gets cleaner as well! :-)))
I was surprised to see that the white guy got away with just a yellow card for his reaction. Granted, the blue guy fell as if he had been hit by a missile, but still...

Argentina vs Germany – Almost live commentary
My apologies. For whatever reason, this post ended published with date May 7th instead of July 5th...
OK, this is it. Our first game against a relevant team. Will we make it to semi-finals? History seems to be against us...
00' - KICK OFF!
01' - Argentina looks sleepy. I fear again...
02' - GOAL FOR GERMANY!!! Mueller connects with a header after a free kick by Schweinsteiger. The Argentine defence is still looking for the ball...
05' - This is not looking good...
12' - Argentina's defence is as strong as a twig
14' - Higuain cannot control a ball in front of the net
19' - I will be very surprised if we end the game with all 11 players
21' - Good chance for Tevez, keeper gets there first
23' - Klose barely misses the 2-0
28' - Nothing, nothing, nothing... Argentina forgot to come to this game
29' - Tevez is fouled outside of the 18 yards. Messi to take it... and he does. Horribly.
31' - A shot by Di Maria... Wait a second, we got a shot!!
33' - Now Higuain with a shot. Argentina is waking up!
35' - Argentina scores... but the goal is disallowed. A clear offside
38' - Great shot by Podolski, just wide
44' - Argentina is looking a little better, but it is still very shaky in the back
45' - HALFTIME
45' - SECOND HALF BEGINS
47' - Germany looks as sleepy as Argentina was in the first half.
48' - Great shot by Di Maria, just wide
50' - Messi is having yet another bad game. Argentina better be careful...
57' - Spectacular save by Romero!
58' - Nothing at all from Messi tonight
60' - Nobody in Argentina seems able to control the ball today. We need Pastore to come in, maybe for Maxi and switch to a 3-4-3
63' - A couple of good chances, but again, nothing
66' - GOAL FOR GERMANY!! Klose on an empty net after a ball lost in our half. Is Maradona on the bench today? O Coach, where art thou subs?
69' - Pastore x Otamendi. Again, 20 minutes too late, Maradona!
73' - GOAL FOR GERMANY!!! Schweinstager walks around the box at will, since Otamendi is no longer there, and sends the ball across for the easy touch by Friedrich
75' - Agüero goes in for Di Maria
77' - Argentina gave up after the second goal. This could end in an even bigger score.
78' - Let's look at the bright side: at least Maradona won't be running around naked like he promised!
80' - If it wasn't for Romero, we would be 0-5 by now
81' - What a horrible game by Messi tonight. He clearly isn't the new Maradona...
85' - Please put an end to this game... and to Maradona's stint as coach!
86' - Messi with a shot! First ball he doesn't lose in forever
88' - GOAL FOR GERMANY!!! Klose after a great counter attack. The Argentine players looked like those orange cones we use for practices
90' - Messi with the final shot
90' + 1 - END OF THE MATCH!! Germany trashes Argentina and sends them out. End of the ridiculous Maradona era?

Please fire Maradona and then have to decency to resign, Grondona. You're too old and too corrupt to continue doing this damage to our soccer and our National Team.
