I got three out of four right, and you've got to agree with me that I was this close to 100 percent accuracy (see Brazil vs Chile). Let's see how I do with the right side of the draw!

France vs Nigeria

France has been one of the strongest teams so far, and they should not have any problems disposing of the Nigerian squad.

That being said, they are playing against one of the most unpredictable teams in the world. If everything goes okay, Benzema, Valbuena and company should be very happy at the end of the day. But again, those Nigerians...

Germany vs Algeria 

Here we have the team everyone expects to be in quarterfinals versus the team no one expected to be in the quarterfinals.

Germany is normally strong, but they haven't looked that strong so far. They struggled against Ghana on the struggled against the US. On the other side, Algeria hasdefinitely gone beyond their own expectations. The only memories they have about playing Germany in the World Cup are good ones, having beaten them 3-2 in Spain '82. Time for my crazy prediction of the day!

Argentina vs Switzerland

In normal conditions, this should be a no contest. The difference in experience and talent between Argentina and Switzerland is so big, that the South American team should coast to a comfortable win. They haven't been playing well at all, though, so expect a nail biter unless somebody can rise to the challenge and give Messi the support he desperately needs.

USA vs Belgium

This should be the end of the road for the hard fighting American team. Belgium has a young roster, bursting with talent, but that is not fully there yet. That could be the only way the exceptionally fit US team can sneak out with the win.

Francia vs Nigeria

Francia ha sido uno de los equipos más fuertes hasta ahora y no deberían tener problemas para deshacerse de Nigeria.

Hecha la aclaración, estarán jugando contra uno de los equipos más impredecibles del mundo. Si todo va ok, Benzema, Valbuena y compañía deberían estar muy felices al final del día. Pero de nuevo, estos nigerianos...

Alemania vs Argelia 

Aquí tenemos al equipo al que todo el mundo espera está en cuartos de final enfrentando al equipo al que nadie espera estar en cuartos de final.

Alemania normalmente un equipo sólido, pero no han mostrado eso hasta ahora. Tuvieron problemas con Ghana y tuvieron problemas con Estados Unidos, dos equipos que definitivamente no son top 10. Del otro lado, Argelia definitivamente ha ido más allá de sus propias expectativas. Los únicos recuerdos que tienen acerca de enfrentar a Alemania son buenos, habiéndonos derrotado 3-2 en España '82. Es hora de mi predicción loca del día!

Argentina vs Suiza

En condiciones normales, no debería haber margen de duda. La diferencia en experiencia y talento entre Argentina y Suiza es tan grande que los sudamericanos deberían tener el camino allanado hacia una victoria fácil. Sin embargo, no han jugado nada bien hasta ahora, así que vamos a tener que comernos las uñas hasta el final del partido, a menos que alguno finalmente se haga cargo y le dé a Messi el apoyo que tanto necesita.

USA vs Bélgica

'Hasta aquí llegó mi amor', debieran decir los norteamericanos. Bélgica tiene un equipo joven, que explota de talento, pero al cual aún le falta una 'horneada'. Esa debiera ser la única forma en la cual en equipo de Estados Unidos -con un estado físico excepcional-podría quedarse con la victoria histórica.

FIFA World Cup 2014 – Round of 16 (Part 1/2)

It’s getting interesting now! We have four attractive games this weekend and another four once the week begins, so I will start with the first group

Brazil vs Chile

Brazil has not impressed me at all in the group stage. They barely beat Croatia, they struggled to score against Mexico and they didn’t look too strong in defence against Cameroon. They depend way too much on Neymar, and he has delivered so far, but how far can they go like that! In front they have one of the best performing squads so far, Chile, who beat Australia with authority and then disposed of the reigning champions efficiently. Even in their 0-2 loss to Netherlands, they look strong, organized and cohesive.

What do I think about this game? I have a feeling that Chile’s team will be enough to upset Brazil and its starts.

Colombia vs Uruguay

Colombia was arguably the best South American team so far, and they have a bunch of very young stars that will do big things in the near future. They play against a team that has lost its biggest star on a controversial decision after an even more controversial situation. I don’t think the Uruguayans will have the strength, the skills and/or the mental fortitude to overcome this obstacle.

Costa Rica vs Greece

The two Cinderellas play each other. I believe the ticos will prevail, and Costa Rica will write the most glorious page of its soccer history.

Netherlands vs Mexico

Mexico’s dream will come crashing when they playing against the strongest team in the tournament so far. As good as the Mexican looked in the group stage, you have to consider who they played against (Croatia, Cameroon and a very weak Brazil). I just hope it doesn’t end looking too bad for El Tri.

Se está poniendo interesante! Tenemos cuatro partidos atractivos este finde, y otros cuatro una vez que la semana empieza, así que comenzaré con el primer gruipo.

Brasil vs Chile

Brasil no me ha impresionado para nada en la fase de grupos. Apenas le ganaron a Croacia, la pasaron mal con Mexico y no parecieron muy fuertes atrás contra Camerún. Dependen demasiado de Neymar, y si bien el ha respondido a las expectativas hasta ahora, uno se pregunta cuánto puede durar. En frente tendrán a uno de los equipos que mejor ha jugado hasta ahora, Chile, que le ganó con autoridad a Australia y despachó eficientemente a los campeones reinantes. Incluso en su derrota 0-2 contra Holanda, los chilenos parecieron fuertes, organizados y tuvieron cohesión.

Qué pienso de este partido? Creo que el poderío de Chile como equipo va a terminar imponiéndose a las estrellas brasileñas.

Colombia vs Uruguay

Colombia fue el mejor equipo sudamericano hasta ahora,y tiene un grupo de estrellas que están emergiendo y van a ser grandes en el futuro cercano. Juegan contra una escuadra que ha perdido a su estrella máxima luego de un fallo controvertido que siguió a una situación aún más controvertida. No creo que los uruguayos tengan la fuerza, la habilidad y la presencia de ánimo para sobrellevar esta situación.

Costa Rica vs Grecia

Las dos Cenicientas juegan entre sí. Creo que los ticos van a prevalecer, y Costa Rica escribirá la más gloriosa página de su historia futbolera el día de hoy.

Holanda vs México

El sueño mexicano hoy se desplomará en llamas cuando jueguen contra el mejor equipo del torneo hasta ahora. Los aztecas lucieron bien en la fase de grupos, pero hay que considerar contra quiénes jugaron (Croacia, Camerún y este pálido Brasil). Sólo espero que las cosas no terminen luciendo tan mal para El Tri.

FIFA World Cup 2014 – Analyzing Group ‘H’

Ok, the last group, with a clear favourite here: Belgium. They have a strong yet young squad, with world class players like Kompany and Lukaku. This generation of Belgians will go far! They will have no problems winning all three games, in my opinion.

The rest of the teams are very weak, though. Russia is the next host, in 2018, and I don’t think they will make it out of Group Stage, which is sad. It will all depend on how they do against the tough, but efficient South Korean side. Algeria has no chance, and I will be surprised if they pick up one point.

Ok, el último grupo, con un favorito evidente: Bélgica. Tienen  un poderoso y aún joven equipo, con jugadores de clase mundial como Kompany y Lukaku. Esta generación de belgas va a llegar lejos! No van a tener problemas en ganar los tres partidos, en mi opinión.

El resto de los equipos son muy débiles en comparación. Rusia es el próximo anfitrión en 2018, y yo no creo que clasifique a la siguiente ronda, lo que es malo. Creo que todo va a depender de cómo les vaya contra el áspero pero eficiente equipo coreano. Argelia no tiene chance de nada, y me sorprenderán mucho si se llevan un punto.

FIFA World Cup 2014 – Analyzing Group “G”

We made it to the ‘Group of Death’… or is it? Let’s be honest, this group is still for Germany to win, the difference between them and the rest is still big. Now about the other three… USA is making a lot of progress, and they are doing everything well with regards to the MLS, so I would really like to see that rewarded with a second place and them advancing to the Round of 16. Can they pull it off by beating Portugal? My head says ‘no’ but I have a hunch so I will give them the nod.

Portugal is definitely a one-man-band. The difference in quality between Ronaldo and the rest of his team is as big as the difference between Argentina and their rivals in Group E. Will it be enough to beat Ghana? Probably. What about the rest? Maybe a tie with the US and definitely a loss versus Germany. Ghana will –in my opinion– follow the path of the other African nations (except for Ivory Coast) and end in last place.

Llegamos al ‘Group of Death’… o no? Seamos honestos, este grupo es todo de Alemania, la diferencia entre ellos y el resto es aún muy grande. Con respecto a los otros tres… USA ha progresado mucho, y están haciendo todo bien con la MLS, así que me gustaría mucho que eso tuviera su recompensa con un segundo puesto que los haga avanzar a los Octavos de Final. Podrán hacerlo, venciendo a Portugal? Mi cabeza dice ‘no’, pero tengo una corazonada así que les voy a dar mi voto de confianza.

Portugal es definitivamente Ronaldo y 10 más. La diferencia de calidad entre CR7 y el resto de su equipo es tan grande como la que hay entre Argentina y sus rivales del Grupo E. Será suficiente para que vencer a Ghana? Tal vez. Pero el resto? Tal vez un empate con USA pero definitivamente van a perder con Alemania. Ghana –en mi opinión– seguirá el camino de sus pares africanos (excepto por Costa de Marfil) y terminará en cuarto puesto.

FIFA World Cup 2014 – Analyzing Group “F”

Well, this is by far the easiest group to analyze and predict!!! The difference –in the papers– between Argentina and the other three teams is just abysmal. My home country has what we could probably call the best offense in the world (Di María, Agüero, Higuaín and a man named Messi)… but also a very uneven, almost weak defence. If Romero and the guys in the back don’t go back to their old ways, Argentina will cruise to the second round without worries… now, which one will be the other team?

I will put my bet on Bosnia-Herzegovina.  They should not have a problem beating the very weak Iranian side, and also Nigeria, which is –like Spain– in decline. Bosnia should not pose any inconveniences to Argentina, though. We will see…

Something I have been telling people here at work. I predict Nigeria-Iran will be one of the most boring games in the World Cup, if not the worst. I’m sure!

Bueno, este es por mucho el grupo más fácil de predecir!!! La diferencia –en los papeles– entre Argentina y los otros tres equipos es abismal. El equipo de mi país tiene lo que podríamos considerar fácilmente la mejor delantera en el mundo (Di María, Agüero, Higuaín y un tal Messi)… pero también una muy impredecible, y a veces débil defensa. Si Romero y sus colegas no se mandan las cagadas de otros partidos, Argentina debería llevarse el grupo por delante sin despeinarse… pero quién los acompañará?

Yo pongo las fichas en Bosnia-Herzegovina.  No van a tener problemas en hacerle unos cuantos goles a los débiles iraníes, y también deberían derrotar a una Nigeria que –como España– está en franco declive. No le debería complicar la vida a Argentina, sin embargo. Veremos…

Algo que le he venido anticipando a la gente en mi trabajo. Predigo que Nigeria-Iran va a ser uno de los partidos más aburridos del Mundial, sino el peor. Qué les juego?

FIFA World Cup 2014 – Analyzing Group “E”

Group “E” is –a priori–  one of the easiest to predict, as it features two very strong European teams (France and Switzerland) and two seemingly weaker team from the Americas (Ecuador and Honduras). France looks very strong coming to the World Cup, even without Ribéry, and it should not have any problems picking up the necessary points to win the group.

I don’t see Honduras making out of the bottom of this group, unless they pick up a point against Ecuador and they come in 3rd by goal difference, but other than that… This leaves the before mentioned Ecuadorian side and the Swiss. I think Switzerland should not have any problems beating Ecuador, which did a very good job in the toughest Qualifying Round in the world.

I think it’s possible to have Switzerland and France tied with 7 points each at the end of the group stage, but I will give the French the first position, again on goal difference. Ecuador should pick up the third spot and go home satisfied, as they have done a great job so far.

Me parece que el Grupo  “E” es –a priori–  uno de los más fáciles de predecir, ya que tiene dos equipos europeos muy fuertes (Francia y Suiza) y dos de América que parecen más débiles (Ecuador y Honduras). Francia está en muy buena forma para este Mundial, incluso sin Ribéry, y no debiera tener problemas para llevarse los puntos necesarios para ganar el grupo.

No veo para Honduras otro destino que el de ser último, a menos que le roben un puntito a Ecuador y terminen terceros por diferencia de gol, pero si no es eso… Así nos quedan los ecuatorianos y los suizos. Creo que Suiza no va a tener inconvenientes con Ecuador, que sin embargo cumplió un muy buen papel en las Eliminatorias más difíciles del mundo.

Creo que es posible que Suiza y Francia terminen empatados en 7 puntos al final de la fase de grupos, pero le voy a dar el primer puesto a Francia, de nuevo por diferencia de gol. Ecuador se debería llevar el tercer puesto e irse contento a casa, porque están haciendo las cosas muy bien.

FIFA World Cup 2014 – Analyzing Group “D”

Welcome to the first ‘Group of Death’! This is a great one, featuring three former world champions. Of them, I see England as being the one taking an early ticket back home; you know that getting rid of Italy or Uruguay during group stage is virtually impossible.

England doesn’t seem to have that presence or that greatness that is required to advance in such a tough group, hence my pick. Oh, and poor Costa Rica.

So here are my predictions:

Bienvenidos al primer ‘Grupo de la Muerte’! Este está buenísimo, y tiene tres ex-campeones del mundo. De entre ellos, veo a Inglaterra como el que se va a tener que tomar el avión antes de tiempo; sabemos que sacarse de encima a Italia o a Uruguay en fase de grupos es prácticamente imposible.

Inglaterra no parece tener la presencia, la solidez o la grandeza requerida para avanzar en un grupo tan duro, de ahí mi pronóstico. Ah, otra cosa: pobre Costa Rica…
