Group "C" predictions

canada

I see Group “C” as weaker than most of the rest. England is the natural candidate here, and they should make it all the way to at least the quarterfinals, but… they’re playing horribly. Just this past weekend, they salvaged a game against lowly Japan, coming from a 0-1 deficit to win 2-1 thanks to two own goals (the first one was amazing, you should watch it). With a slightly decimated roster and a couple of bad games on route to this World Cup, but with history and prestige behind them, England should win this group. But I don’t think they will get three wins, though. I would predict a 2-0-1 (6 points) or a 1-2-0 (5 points).

I don’t think Algeria has a chance to advance here, so that leaves two teams: Slovenia and United States. I think about the US team the same that I said about Mexico: they’re lucky to make it to every cup lately because they don’t have any serious competition in their continent. But unlike Mexico, United States has impressed in his recent matches, and they seem to be in top form. That should be enough to beat Slovenia (who’s making their first participation in a World Cup) to the second spot, but only by a nose.

It’s odd how FIFA does the draws for the World Cup. They have a thousand different rules that sometimes exclude each other, and that’s why you end with groups where you have four teams of comparable power (like Group “A”), or groups where there is a team that is clearly unopposed (like Spain in Group “H”). You know that Brazil and Italy will normally get comfortable groups (though it doesn’t look like that for Brazil this time) and for whatever reason, Paraguay always gets screwed!

My predictions, then:

GROUP “C” STANDINGS
1)
England
2)
United States
3)
Slovenia
4)
Algeria

argentina

1)
Inglaterra
2)
Estados Unidos
3)
Eslovenia
4)
Argelia

Group "B" predictions

canada
If Group A is “The Group of Death”, then is Group B “The Group of Life” for Argentina? Many think so, but I disagree, and give some of Argentina’s rivals a little more credit that what they’re getting right now. Still, it’s not as tough as Group A or Group G, where Brazil and Portugal (#1 and #3 of the –chortle- respected FIFA Ranking) will collide.

Do I think Argentina is going to take this group? Yes, I do. But it won’t be easy. Argentina has an outstanding roster, even with those few questionable last minute picks. Man by man, line by line, they’re probably better than everybody else. The problem is… they are not a team yet. Argentina’s coach Diego Maradona would be to blame for this, but let’s place the blame where it belongs: the archaic, corrupt and generally useless board of the ‘Asociación del Fútbol Argentino’ that has appointed as our national team’s coach somebody whose only credentials were sending Racing Club straight into relegation after having coached another team (Mandiyú, from the city of Corrientes) that disappeared soon after. Heck, he didn’t even have a title until the ‘AFA’ gave him one for free a couple of weeks ago!

Maradona is as erratic, volatile and unpredictable as a coach as he is as a person, a complete 180º turn from what he was as a player. We certainly have to hope that he will make the right decisions when naming the starting 11, planning the games and especially making the substitutions. If all of that happens, then Argentina’s group stage games should be easy. But I don’t see that happening. I really hope we don’t end depending on Boca Junior’s Palermo to save us once again. Based on the individual talent of its players (just take a look at the forwards: Messi, Higuaín, Milito, Tévez, Agüero and Palermo), Argentina should win the group. Let’s hope they consolidate as a team as they progress, so they stand a chance in 1/8th and quarterfinals.

The team I foresee going home early is Greece, of course. I cannot see them beating either Argentina or Nigeria, not even South Korea. Maybe I’m wrong and I will have to eat my words, but I don’t see a lot of power in there.

Now what’s the other team to advance along with Argentina? I will pick Nigeria, but I guarantee that South Korea will give them –and Argentina– a run for their money. Like before with Argentina, mostly based on their individual talent, I think Nigeria should prevail.

Again, let’s summarize:
GROUP “B” STANDINGS

1)
Argentina

2)
Nigeria

3)
South Korea

4)

Group “C” prediction coming on Monday!

argentina

Otra vez resumamos:

POSICIONES DEL GRUPO “B”

1)
Argentina

2)
Nigeria

3)
Corea del Sur

4)

Group "A" predictions

canada

Let’s have a little fun, OK? I will take a look at the eight groups of this World Cup and make predictions on who is going to advance and who is going to check out earlier. We will start with Group “A”, of course, and I’m planning to do this all the way till the final game, building the quarterfinal, semi-final and final games according to my predictions.

Group “A” is a serious candidate to be given the name of “The Group of Death” as it features four national teams that are pretty much at the same level (according to me): South Africa, the host, France, Mexico and Uruguay. So what is my prediction here? Take a sit, please…

I think this World Cup will see one of the fastest exits by the host team, as I don’t expect South Africa to make it through. And here’s the other shocker: I predict Uruguay will win it! Why? Because every game is going to be a war, and who better than Uruguay for that kind of games? Here’s the one team I never want to play against in a World Cup, and I think many Brazilians will think the same. Bring me Germany, Nederland, England, even Brazil, no problem. Throw 11 Uruguayan jerseys on the field and I will feel we’re losing 0-1 already. :-) Besides, they have Diego Forlán, and that’s a good thing.

So, with Uruguay winning the group and South Africa going (OK, staying) home, who will come in second. Much to my chagrin, overhyped Mexico will take the spot. France is struggling so much that they will even fall below this Mexican team that has never accomplished anything, yet is always among the top 10 in the (pause for chucking) FIFA ranking. I wish Argentina would get the rivals Mexico gets on its way to the World Cup!! Tell me what is tougher, earning one of 3.5 spots when you’re playing against (sorry, no intention to offend) Nicaragua, Cuba or Grenada, or earning one of 4.5 when you play against Chile, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, Colombia… yes, that’s what I meant.

So, in order to summarize:

GROUP “A” STANDINGS
1)
Uruguay
2)
Mexico
3)
France
4)
South Africa

Group “B” prediction coming tomorrow!

Hagamos algo entretenido, OK?

1)
Uruguay
2)
México
3)
Francia
4)
Sudáfrica

The ‘big guys’

canada

There are 76 national teams that have played in at least one FIFA World Cup and a record 204 that took part of the Qualifying Rounds for this year's edition. If you look at it, FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) has 208 members, while the United Nations have 192. That pretty much tells you something about how big this game it is!

Oh, now you want to know who those 16 countries are... Off the top of my head, Puerto Rico, Guam, Faroe Islands, Aruba, Hong Kong, Montserrat and the UK countries. And there are others that I can't remember right now (EDIT: Here's the full list)

But among those 76 (or 208) there is a bunch that are seen by most as the 'big guys', like in every sport. In my mind, there are either three or five 'big guys': Brazil, Italy, Germany, Argentina and Uruguay. There's a simple reason for that: these five have won 16 of the 18 World Cups that have been played so far, and with just three exceptions (Chile '62, England '66 and France '98), there have always been at least two of these teams among the top four teams.

Brazil clearly leads the pack, with 5 titles, 2 second places, 2 third places and 1 fourth. Then we have Italy (4,2,1 and 1, respectively) and German (3,4,3 and 1). I think, much to my chagrin, that there's a jump from there and to where Argentina and Uruguay sit. Both national teams have won 2 titles each, with Argentina having ended as runner-ups in two occasions and Uruguay achieving 4th place in two World Cups as well. What really plays against these two teams (especially Argentina) is the fact that there were no World Cups between 1938 and 1950, which is when Argentina was without a doubt the strongest team in the world (victories against Brazil for seven or more goals were very common back then, just as an example). To make things even worse, Argentina refused to play in 1950 and 1954, which explains why fantastic players like Alfredo Di Stefano never saw a minute in a World Cup (he began playing for Spain in 1957, but his team failed to qualify and got injured right before the 1962 Cup in Chile, which caused him to retire soon after). I will talk about Di Stefano (the greatest footballer of all times) later, but let's continue with the subject of this post.

There are two more teams that have won a World Cup, England and France. Both won it at home, and in strange circumstances. Take England '66, for example: the semi-finals were England-Portugal and Germany-Soviet Union, and the referees were from Germany and England, respectively. Guess who won... And then there's the issue of that 3rd English goal in the final game where the ball never went in. The France '98 final game also was surrounded by controversy, after Ronaldo was pulled from the starting line-up just an hour before the match amid rumours that he had suffered a seizure the night before; he requested to be reinstated and got his wish granted, but performed way below the expectations (along with the whole team).

Though they have never won a title, I put Netherlands (twice runner-ups , one fourth), Hungary (2 runner-ups) and even Sweden (1 runner-up, 2 thirds, 1 fourth) among the ‘big guys’, probably at the same level that England and maybe France. Though Hungary’s present is not the brightest, not having qualified to a World Cup since 1986, nobody can deny that they were the best European teams in the ‘50s and part of the ‘60s. Even more, if you ask anybody which are the three greatest teams in World Cup history, they will surely say Brazil ‘70, Nederlands ‘74 and Hungary ‘54 (not necessarily in that order). That Hungary didn’t get to win the FIFA World Cup in 1954 is just a travesty.

So there they are, my top 10. If I had to rank them, my list would probably look like this:

Rank
Team
1st 2nd 3rd 4th

Brazil
5 2 2 1

How does your ranking look like?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

argentina

Rank

Argentina’s final roster

image
Pic from Wikipedia

canada

So here is the list submitted by our volatile, unpredictable coach Diego Maradona. There are a few surprises, as usual, and though some choices look very questionable at first, I can give DM a mulligan since there's nothing too tragic here.  Garcé surely was the biggest surprise, not only due to his age (30) or the team he plays for (mid-table Colón, in Argentina) but also because he has only played one game during the Maradona era, and that was the very last one, against Haiti. He's a good player alright, and I can understand Maradona needing somebody who can play left or right back, but Garcé is a very unexpected choice when you have guys like Vélez Sarsfield's Emiliano Papa or Inter's Javier Zanetti not going to South Africa. Plus Clemente Rodríguez is also on the roster.

And about Zanetti... once again one of the longest serving players in the albiceleste history gets to watch the World Cup on TV. Given Zanetti's present, just having won the Italian league and going for the triple crown this Saturday against Bayern Munich, his absence is pretty much inexplicable. But rumour has it that he doesn't get along with Juan Verón and that is the main reason why DM gave him the thumbs down, decision that also affected his teammate Esteban Cambiasso. Knowing Maradona, how inconsistent and easily influenced he is, I don't think this version is too far fetched...

The reason for Pozo and Garcé (both Colón players) presences also has an interesting rumour behind: they are both represented by the same gentleman, who might be doing some business with members of the coaching team... this is one of the few ways to understand why two players from a team that was among those with the most goals against are going to South Africa and players from recent champions Banfield and Argentinos Juniors or 'big teams' like River Plate, San Lorenzo or Independiente didn't even have a chance...

There aren't too many objections to the rest of the keepers and defenders that DM picked, though many are not fans of Heinze, a rustic centre back. But there is a good mix of experience and youth in there; I'm fine with that. I expect Romero to start in net and Otamendi, DeMichelis, Samuel and Heinze be the four starting backs. Interestingly, they are all centre backs, same as Burdisso. Garcé and Clemente are the only two who can play on the sides here, though Garcé has been playing centre back lately. I just don't understand Maradona's line of thought here, but I know I'm not alone.

The starter midfielders should be Jonás Gutiérrez (outside right), Mascherano and Verón (inside mids) and Angel Di María (outside left) and that is all right. Nobody can deny Mascherano's or Verón's skills or qualifications, they're definitely the best out there; Gutiérrez and Di María have not only done very well every time they've played for the 'Selección', but are also having great seasons in their respective clubs. Maxi Rodríguez is the natural substitute and Bolatti and Pastore (who played for Argentina’s Huracán  last year, a team that dazzled many with their exquisite soccer) are a couple of steps behind. Bolatti scored the agonic goal against Uruguay that allow Argentina to avoid the play-off game against Costa Rica. At the end of that game a very... umm... emotional Maradona announced that he would be in South Africa, and he will. Pastore's presence can be understood from the point of view of him being the only one who can play as an 'enganche' (offensive midfield), because he's only 20 and he hasn't played a single match for the national team yet... he was part of the squad against Germany in 2009, but never went in.

The forwards are those everybody wanted to see. There is no doubt that Messi and Higuaín will be the starters, but Carlos Tévez is definitely Maradona's '12th man' and he will send him on the field the moment he gets anxious with Higuaín. Poor 'Pipita', knowing that even after his fantastic season with Real Madrid and his 2 goals in just 4 games, the coach doesn't necessarily trust him. I wonder how much time will Diego Milito play too; that's another player who had an outstanding season with Inter Milan. Agüero will be on the pitch without a doubt (hey, he's Maradona's son-in-law!) and I have no doubt he will resort to Palermo whenever we're down in the score with just five minutes to go. I admire 'El Titán', he has a drive, determination and heroic aura that I have never seen in anybody else. Many times we were expecting him to be the team's saviour, either playing for Estudiantes, Boca Juniors or the National Team, and he always delivered. My hat goes off to him, I’m happy he gets to play in a World Cup. He earned it.

So there it is. Am I happy with this roster? Yes, mostly. I don't understand Zanetti's absence, except for the reasons I mentioned above, and having two Colón players among the 23 is more than suspicious to me. But as I have said many times already, we have to get use to expect the unexpected when we have a guy like Maradona sitting on the bench. Oh, and yes, he will be able to sit on the bench now, because AFA gave him his coaching title. Without having to study for it.

Benefits of being one of the greatest of all time.

argentina

Why do I start another blog…

canada

Well, here I am starting yet another blog. As prolific a blogger as I am, I could have easily try to squeeze these posts in my current blog "Live from Waterloo", but I decided against it.

There are some good reasons for that: first, I'm going to be blogging about only one subject here, which is the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, and particularly about Argentina. This would pretty much go against the eclectic nature of my blog, same as the fact that I won't be talking about myself and/or my family in 95% of the posts.

The second reason I cannot tell yet, but I promise it's going to be very exciting! :-)

I will publish my first post tonight, in which I will analyze the list of 23 players that Argentine coach Diego Maradona is about to release as I'm writing this.

See you then!
