So here is the list submitted by our volatile, unpredictable coach Diego Maradona. There are a few surprises, as usual, and though some choices look very questionable at first, I can give DM a mulligan since there's nothing too tragic here.  Garcé surely was the biggest surprise, not only due to his age (30) or the team he plays for (mid-table Colón, in Argentina) but also because he has only played one game during the Maradona era, and that was the very last one, against Haiti. He's a good player alright, and I can understand Maradona needing somebody who can play left or right back, but Garcé is a very unexpected choice when you have guys like Vélez Sarsfield's Emiliano Papa or Inter's Javier Zanetti not going to South Africa. Plus Clemente Rodríguez is also on the roster.

And about Zanetti... once again one of the longest serving players in the albiceleste history gets to watch the World Cup on TV. Given Zanetti's present, just having won the Italian league and going for the triple crown this Saturday against Bayern Munich, his absence is pretty much inexplicable. But rumour has it that he doesn't get along with Juan Verón and that is the main reason why DM gave him the thumbs down, decision that also affected his teammate Esteban Cambiasso. Knowing Maradona, how inconsistent and easily influenced he is, I don't think this version is too far fetched...

The reason for Pozo and Garcé (both Colón players) presences also has an interesting rumour behind: they are both represented by the same gentleman, who might be doing some business with members of the coaching team... this is one of the few ways to understand why two players from a team that was among those with the most goals against are going to South Africa and players from recent champions Banfield and Argentinos Juniors or 'big teams' like River Plate, San Lorenzo or Independiente didn't even have a chance...

There aren't too many objections to the rest of the keepers and defenders that DM picked, though many are not fans of Heinze, a rustic centre back. But there is a good mix of experience and youth in there; I'm fine with that. I expect Romero to start in net and Otamendi, DeMichelis, Samuel and Heinze be the four starting backs. Interestingly, they are all centre backs, same as Burdisso. Garcé and Clemente are the only two who can play on the sides here, though Garcé has been playing centre back lately. I just don't understand Maradona's line of thought here, but I know I'm not alone.

The starter midfielders should be Jonás Gutiérrez (outside right), Mascherano and Verón (inside mids) and Angel Di María (outside left) and that is all right. Nobody can deny Mascherano's or Verón's skills or qualifications, they're definitely the best out there; Gutiérrez and Di María have not only done very well every time they've played for the 'Selección', but are also having great seasons in their respective clubs. Maxi Rodríguez is the natural substitute and Bolatti and Pastore (who played for Argentina’s Huracán  last year, a team that dazzled many with their exquisite soccer) are a couple of steps behind. Bolatti scored the agonic goal against Uruguay that allow Argentina to avoid the play-off game against Costa Rica. At the end of that game a very... umm... emotional Maradona announced that he would be in South Africa, and he will. Pastore's presence can be understood from the point of view of him being the only one who can play as an 'enganche' (offensive midfield), because he's only 20 and he hasn't played a single match for the national team yet... he was part of the squad against Germany in 2009, but never went in.

The forwards are those everybody wanted to see. There is no doubt that Messi and Higuaín will be the starters, but Carlos Tévez is definitely Maradona's '12th man' and he will send him on the field the moment he gets anxious with Higuaín. Poor 'Pipita', knowing that even after his fantastic season with Real Madrid and his 2 goals in just 4 games, the coach doesn't necessarily trust him. I wonder how much time will Diego Milito play too; that's another player who had an outstanding season with Inter Milan. Agüero will be on the pitch without a doubt (hey, he's Maradona's son-in-law!) and I have no doubt he will resort to Palermo whenever we're down in the score with just five minutes to go. I admire 'El Titán', he has a drive, determination and heroic aura that I have never seen in anybody else. Many times we were expecting him to be the team's saviour, either playing for Estudiantes, Boca Juniors or the National Team, and he always delivered. My hat goes off to him, I’m happy he gets to play in a World Cup. He earned it.

So there it is. Am I happy with this roster? Yes, mostly. I don't understand Zanetti's absence, except for the reasons I mentioned above, and having two Colón players among the 23 is more than suspicious to me. But as I have said many times already, we have to get use to expect the unexpected when we have a guy like Maradona sitting on the bench. Oh, and yes, he will be able to sit on the bench now, because AFA gave him his coaching title. Without having to study for it.

Bien, aquí está la lista creada por nuestro volátil e impredecible técnico, Diego Maradona. Hay algunas sorpresas, como siempre, y si bien algunas elecciones parecen muy cuestionables de entrada, le puedo dar a DM un poco de 'changüí' porque no hay nada muy trágico allí. Garcé es seguramente la sorpresa más grande, no solo por su edad (30) o el equipo para el que juega (Colón, un equipo de mitad de la tabla en Argentina) sino también porque sólo jugó un partido en la era Maradona, y fue la semana pasada contra Haití. Es un buen jugador, sí, y puedo entender que Maradona precisara alguien que pueda jugar de lateral, pero Garcé es una elección muy inesperada cuando uno tiene jugadores como Emiliano Papa (Vélez) o Javier Zanetti (Inter) que no viajarán a Sudáfrica. Y Clemente Rodríguez, otro lateral, está en el plantel.

Y ya que hablamos de Zanetti... nuevamente uno de los jugadores más experimentados de la historia de la albiceleste se tiene que conformar con mirar la Copa por TV. Dado el presente de Zanetti, que acaba de ganar la Liga Italiana y este sábado se puede llevar la Triple Corona ante el Bayern Munich, su ausencia es inexplicable. Hay rumores, empero, que dicen que no se lleva muy bien con Juan Verón y que DM le 'bajó el pulgar', siendo esa medida extensiva a su compañero Esteban Cambiasso. Conociendo a Maradona, sus contradicciones y la facilidad con que se lo influencia, no me sorprendería para nada que esto sea cierto...

La razón por la que Pozo y Garcé (ambos de Colón) estén presentes tambien tiene un rumor interesante detrás: aparentemente ambos tienen el mismo representante, que estaría haciendo algún negocio con integrantes del plantel técnico de la Selección... esa sería una buena forma de entender cómo puede ser que dos jugadores que pertenecen a uno de los equipos más goleados del último torneo vayan a Sudáfrica y jugadores de los últimos dos campeones (Banfield y Argentinos Juniors) o de los equipos 'grandes' como River Plate, Independiente y San Lorenzo no tengan chances...

No hay muchas objeciones al resto de los arqueros y defensores elegidos por DM, aunque sé que Heinze -un rústico marcador central- no tiene muchos fans. Pero hay una buena mezcla de experiencia y juventud allí; eso me gusta. Calculo que Romero será el arquero titular y la defensa integrará a Otamendi, Demichelis, Samuel y Heinze. Interesante, son todos marcadores centrales, lo mismo que Burdisso. Garcé y Clemente Rodríguez son los naturales 'marcadores de punta' de este grupo, aunque Garcé ha estado jugando en el centro últimamente. No entiendo el pensamiento de Maradona aquí, pero bueno, no soy el único.

Los mediocampistas titulares debieran ser Jonás Gutiérrez por la derecha, Mascherano y Verón en el medio y Angel Di María por la izquierda, y eso está bien. Nadie puede negar los pergaminos o condiciones de Mascherano y Verón, que son definitivamente lo mejor que tenemos para esa posición; Gutiérrez y Di María no solo han rendido muy bien cada vez que jugaron para la selección, sino que también están teniendo muy buenas temporadas en sus respectivos equipos. Maxi Rodríguez es el suplente natural, y Bolatti y Pastore (que jugaron para Huracán el año pasado) estarían más atrás. Bolatti convirtió el gol que nos dió una victoria agónica contra Uruguay y nos permitió evitar el play-off contra Costa Rica. Al final de ese partido un muy... este... emocionado Maradona anunció que Bolatti estaría en Sudáfrica y cumplió. La presencia de Pastore se entiende desde el punto de vista de que es el único que puede jugar de 'enganche' si se necesita, porque sólo tiene 20 años y no ha jugado ni un minuto en la Selección... formó parte del plantel contra Alemania en 2009, pero nunca entró.

Los delanteros son los que todos querían ver. No hay dudas de que Messi e Higuaín serán los titulares, pero Carlos Tévez es definitivamente el 'jugador número 12' de Maradona, y lo enviará al campo de juego en cuanto se ponga ansioso con Higuaín. Pobre 'Pipita', venir de una temporada fantástica con el Real Madrid y sus dos goles en cuatro partidos en la Selección, y saber que el técnico igual no confía en él. Me pregunto cuánto tiempo jugará Diego Milito; ahí tienen otro jugador que viene de tener una temporada excepcional con el Inter de Milán. Agüero va a jugar seguro (hey, es el yerno de 'Diegol'!) y no tengo dudas de que a Palermo lo van a 'tirar' a la cancha en cuanto nos encontremos perdiendo y con 10 minutos por jugar. Admiro al 'Titán', tiene una energía, determinación y aura de héroe que no le conozco a nadie más. Muchas veces se vió en la situación de ser el 'salvador' de su equipo, sea Estudiantes, Boca o la Selección, y siempre cumplió. Me saco el sombrero ante él y me alegra que pueda jugar un Mundial. Se lo merece.

Ahí tienen mi análisis. Estoy contento con este equipo? Sí, en la mayoría. No entiendo la ausencia de Zanetti, excepto por las razones que mencioné arriba, y tener dos jugadores de Colón entre los 23 es más que sospechoso para mí. Pero como dije varias veces antes, uno tiene que esperar lo inesperado cuando se tiene a alguien como Maradona sentado en el banco. Ah, sí, va a poder sentarse en el banco ahora, porque la AFA le dió su título de director técnico. Sí, por supuesto, sin tener que haber estudiado como los demás.

Son los beneficios que se obtienen por haber sido uno de los más grandes futbolistas de la historia.
