If Group A is “The Group of Death”, then is Group B “The Group of Life” for Argentina? Many think so, but I disagree, and give some of Argentina’s rivals a little more credit that what they’re getting right now. Still, it’s not as tough as Group A or Group G, where Brazil and Portugal (#1 and #3 of the –chortle- respected FIFA Ranking) will collide.
Do I think Argentina is going to take this group? Yes, I do. But it won’t be easy. Argentina has an outstanding roster, even with those few questionable last minute picks. Man by man, line by line, they’re probably better than everybody else. The problem is… they are not a team yet. Argentina’s coach Diego Maradona would be to blame for this, but let’s place the blame where it belongs: the archaic, corrupt and generally useless board of the ‘Asociación del Fútbol Argentino’ that has appointed as our national team’s coach somebody whose only credentials were sending Racing Club straight into relegation after having coached another team (Mandiyú, from the city of Corrientes) that disappeared soon after. Heck, he didn’t even have a title until the ‘AFA’ gave him one for free a couple of weeks ago!
Maradona is as erratic, volatile and unpredictable as a coach as he is as a person, a complete 180º turn from what he was as a player. We certainly have to hope that he will make the right decisions when naming the starting 11, planning the games and especially making the substitutions. If all of that happens, then Argentina’s group stage games should be easy. But I don’t see that happening. I really hope we don’t end depending on Boca Junior’s Palermo to save us once again. Based on the individual talent of its players (just take a look at the forwards: Messi, Higuaín, Milito, Tévez, Agüero and Palermo), Argentina should win the group. Let’s hope they consolidate as a team as they progress, so they stand a chance in 1/8th and quarterfinals.
The team I foresee going home early is Greece, of course. I cannot see them beating either Argentina or Nigeria, not even South Korea. Maybe I’m wrong and I will have to eat my words, but I don’t see a lot of power in there.
Now what’s the other team to advance along with Argentina? I will pick Nigeria, but I guarantee that South Korea will give them –and Argentina– a run for their money. Like before with Argentina, mostly based on their individual talent, I think Nigeria should prevail.

Si el Grupo A es “El grupo de la muerte”, entonces es el Grupo B “El grupo de la vida” para Argentina? Muchos piensan eso, pero yo no estoy de acuerdo, y le doy a los rivales un poco más del crédito que han recibido. De todos modos, no es ni por asomo tan difícil como lo son el Grupo A or el Grupo G, donde Brasil y Portugal (#1 y #3 del –risotada- respetadísimo Ranking de la FIFA) se van a encontrar.
Si creo que Argentina va a ganar el grupo? Sí, claro. Pero no va a ser fácil. Argentina tiene un plantel increíblemente rico, incluso con esas cuestionables elecciones de últimom momento. Hombre por hombre y línea por línea, son probablemente mejores que cualquier otro equipo. El problema es… aún les falta mucho para ser un equipo. Uno podría culpar a Diego Maradona (el técnico) por esto, y sería fácil. Pero pongamos la culpa donde corresponde: la arcaica, corrupta y por lo general inútil conducción de la Asociación del Fútbol Argentino, que fue –a través de su impresentable presidente Julio Grondona– quienes contrataron a un Maradona cuyas únicas credenciales como director ténico incluyen haber enviado a Racing Club derechito al descenso luego de haber dirigido otro club (Mandiyú, de la ciudad de Corrientes) que desapareció poco después. Vamos, ni siquiera tenía título hasta que la AFA le regaló uno hace un par de semanas!
Maradona es tan errático, volátil e impredecible como coach como lo es como persona, un giro de 180º respecto de lo que fue como jugador. Tenemos que esperar, por cierto, que tome las decisiones correctas al nombrar a los once que van a empezar cada partido, pero también a la hora de planear los partidos y especialmente a la hora de hacer las sustituciones. Si todo esto ocurre, entonces Argentina debería ganar los partidos de primera ronda con facilidad. Pero no creo que esto suceda. Lo que espero es que no tengamos que una vez más depender de Palermo (Boca Juniors) para que nos salve. Una vez más, basándonos en el talento individual de sus jugadores (sólo miren los delanteros que tenemos: Messi, Higuaín, Milito, Tévez, Agüero y el citado Palermo), Argentina debería ganar el grupo. Esperemos que se consoliden como equipo con el andar de la competencia, así Argentina tiene chances de pasar sus compromisos de octavos y cuartos de final.
El equipo que predigo que se va a ir tempranito es por supuesto Grecia. No los veo ganándole a Argentina o a Nigeria, ni siquiera a Corea del Sur. Tal vez me equivoque y me tenga que tragar mis palabras, pero no veo mucho poder en esta escuadra.
Y qué equipo va a avanzar junto con Argentina? Voy a elegir a Nigeria, pero creo que Corea del Sur les va a dar a ellos -y a nosotros- un buen susto. De nuevo me baso en la suma de talentos individuales para predecir que Nigeria va a prevalecer.
