I cannot believe I forgot to post this on Wednesday!!! No wonder almost nobody visits or comments on this blog anymore...

01' - Argentina has a lot of changes. Tevez, Di Maria, Gutierrez and Higuain are not in, for example
02' - Messi is on the pitch, same as Milito. Messi is the captain today, but I bet he will be subbed at halftime should we lead the score
04' - Clemente Rodríguez's shoes are siler and pink, same as Otamendi's. They look REALLY bad combined with the all blue uniform Argentine is wearing today.
06' - Notice I haven't said anything about the game itself yet. It's just that it's sucks so far.
08' - YAWN!!! The crowd is really excited...
09' - Even the HVA is a little silent. Oh, no, wait, they're in a call conference... :-)
10' - Messi tries to wake us up... to no avail
12' - OK, I will give them five more minutes and that's it. It's getting really boring!
15' - I switched to CBC.ca to check on the Nigeria-South Korea game.
17' - The quality of CBC's live streaming is just AWESOME; it looks even better than on my TV!
18' - GREAT play by Agüero, his shot is sent to the corner kick by the keeper.

23' - Argentina has total control of the game, but it's not aggressive enough. I don't like this.
25' - Messi comes back to control a ball that Bolatti already had in front of him... and we lost it. SIGH!
30' - Free kick for Argentina. Verón takes it and I go 'BOOM'. Then I see where the ball goes and I say 'BOO'...
32' - Agüero misses an incredible chance in front of the net.
34' - Clemente Rodríguez is having a very good game. Lots of balls sent across. I predict he might be playing the next game vs Mexico
38' - GOAL FOR... SOUTH KOREA!!! Oh, sorry, I was distracted watching the other game... It's 1-1, which means Korea is advancing...
40' - They show Verón and Maradona talking while they're taking care of a Greek player. He's giving him instructions, without a doubt. I hope Maradona obeys...
42' - Judging by the amount of hugging that takes place every time there's a free kick or a corner kick, these guys really like each other.
45' - Another shot after a great cross by Clemente, and then -finally!- some magic by Messi.
45' + 1 - HALFTIME SHOW!

45' - Second half begins. I don't see any subs in the Argentine team.
50' - Argentina is still in control, but as imprecise and shallow as during the first half.

57' - A fantastic game by Clemente Rodríguez so far. He almost scored from outside the box

69' - A fantastic shot by Bolatti that the goalkeeper stops with... his manhood. Poor guy...
75' - A miscommunication between a Greek defender and his keeper almost ends in a goal for Argentina...
77' - GOAL FOR ARGENTINA!!! - Demichelis connects a header off a corner kick... and the ball bounces off Milito. Demichelis picks up the rebound and sends it in...
79' - OMG. Is Palermo coming in???
80' - He did! Palermo (the ultimate Argentine hero) finally gets to play in a World Cup, going in for Milito
85' - Awesome play by Messi, he ends hitting the post.
87' - A luxury play by Verón, we finally get to see something worth watching.
88' - GOAL FOR ARGENTINA!!! - And of course it was Palermo!!!! He scores off a rebound made by the goalkeeper. Palermo writes yet another page of his fantastic story. He's just unbelievable.
90' +1 - END OF THE GAME - Argentina wins 2-0 and advances to the second round with a perfect 3-0-0. It's time for Mexico now, game is on Sunday at 2:30 PM EST.

01' - Argentina con muchos cambios. Tevez, Di Maria, Gutierrez e Higuain no juegan hoy, por ejemplo.
02' - Messi sí está, lo mismo que Milito. Messi es el capitán hoy, pero seguro que sale en el entretiempo si ya estamos arriba en el marcador
04' - Los botines de Clemente Rodríguez son plateados y rosa/naranja, igual que los de Otamendi. Lucen MUY mal combinados con el uniforme todo azul que Argentina luce hoy.
06' - Han notado que no he dicho nada sobre el partido en sí todavía? Es que hasta ahora es horrible.
08' - AJUM!!!! La multitud está realmente excitada...
09' - Ni siquiera la HVA hace comentarios. Oh, no, están en teleconferencia y no me di cuenta... :-)

77' - GOL DE ARGENTINA!!! - Demichelis conecta un cabezazo a la salida de un corner...y la pelota le pega a Milito en la mano. Demichelis levanta el rebote y la envía adentro.
79' - OMG. Entra Palermo???
80' - Entró! Martín Palermo (el último héroe argentino) finalmente juega en un Mundial, entrando po Milito
85' - Gran jugada de Messi, su disparo da en el palo.
87' - Una jugada lujosa de Verón, por fin algo digno de ser visto.
88' - GOL DE ARGENTINA!!! - Y por supuesto fue Palermo!!!! Anota luego de un rebote del arquero luego de un tiro de Messi. Palermo escribe otra página en su fantástica biografía. Increíble.
90' +1 - FINAL DEL PARTIDO - Argentina gana 2-0 y avanza a los octavos de final con un perfecto 3-0-0Ahora viene México, el domingo a las 2:30 PM EST.

Not an impressive victory

Argentina venció a Corea del Sur por 4-1 y ahora lleva dos victorias consecutivas. Podría incluso haberse convertido en el primer equipo en avanzar a octavos si Nigeria y Grecia hubieran empatado. Parece muy impresionante, pero creo que la albiceleste aún no ha mostrado todo su potencial.

Messi está jugando en un gran nivel, pero aún le falta el toque final. Yo esperaba que ya tuviera dos goles al menos. Otros, como Carlos Tévez, el arquero Romero y sorprendentemente Gabriel Heinze (por mucho el más resistido de los fans) están teniendo muy buenas actuaciones. Gonzalo Higuaín (Real Madrid) todavía luce nervioso e impreciso, pero igual se las arregló para anotar tres goles ayer, debido sobre todo a que nunca se da por vencido y tiene un gran sentido de la ubicación y la oportunidad. Pero en general, aún no estoy muy impresionado con la performance de Argentina como equipo.

Nuestra defensa tiene problemas. No parece bien ajustada. El gol que regala Demichelis es el mejor ejemplo de ello. Para peor, Walter Samuel se lesionó y Maradona tuvo que enviar a Burdisso al campo con sólo 20 minutos jugados. Nuestros mediocampistas tienen un despliegue admirable; corren y corren, traban y traban, pero todo es muy confuso y la pelota raramente 'llega ‘limpia’ a los delanteros.

Como dije en un post anterior, parecería que nunca pudiéramos ganar sin sufrir un poco. El 2-1 que anotó Corea del Sur al final del primer tiempo dio miedo, sobre todo porque se confiaron y hasta tuvieron chances de empatar. Mirando hacia atrás una vez finalizado el partido, uno se da cuenta de que Argentina tiene un equipo tan fuerte que nunca debiera haber dado la impresión de que la victoria estaba en duda.

Ni Nigeria ni Corea han dado muestras de ser un equipo que le pueda ofrecer resistencia a Argentina, y ciertamente no espero que Grecia sea la excepción. Habrá que esperar hasta la segunda ronda (sería contra México de acuerdo a mi predicción) para que veamos futbol de verdad saliendo de los pies de Messi y los demás?

Miramos el partido en casa; éramos una banda (mi esposa, mi suegra, un amigo, mis cuatro hijos y yo) todos vestidos con la camiseta de la selección. Los chicos llegaron tarde a la escuela y yo me tomé el día en el trabajo. Díganme si esto no me pone en la categoría de superfan?

90' + 1 – A whole lot of nothing. The guys from Univision finally acknowledge that Nigeria plays in our group, and not Ghana
90' + 2 – A good shot by Agüero goes wide
90' + 2 – Final whistle. Argentina wins 4-1
90' + 2 – A tie between Nigeria and Greece will make Argentina the first team to qualify to the Round of 16. UPDATE: It looks like the Greeks had different intentions.

57' – Korea se pierde una chance increíble de empatar. Estamos en problemas. A ver si se me despiertan, muchachos!

72' – Argentina no puede retomar el control del partido. Los jugadores coreanos parecen estar en mejor forma, al punto que da la impresión de que jugaran con 14 en lugar de 11
76' – GOL DE ARGENTINA!!!! Higuaín nuevamente, luego de que Messi pegue su tiro en el palo. Higuaín es como mi hijo Santi, siempre está donde tiene que estar.
80’ – GOL DE ARGENTINA!!!! Espectacular ‘tricota’ de Higuaín luego de una gran jugada de Agüero (que acaba de entrar por Higuaín) y Messi.
90' + 1 – Nada para escribir. Los de Univisión por fin se dan cuenta de que es Nigeria quien juega en nuestro grupo, y no Ghana.
90' + 2 – Buen tiro de Agüero que se va desviado
90' + 2 – Silbato final. Argentina gana 4-1
90' + 2 – Un empate entre Nigeria y Greece dejaría a Argentina como el primer equipo que clasifique a los octavos de final. NOTA: Se ve que los griegos tenían otras intenciones…

Game #1 report card

I'm writing a quick post during my 30' lunch break, as the first round of games has just finished with Switzerland's victory over Spain (which some call an upset but I don't). Let's see which teams have lived up to their expectations, which ones pulled off some surprises and which ones disappointed me so far:

Performed according to my expectations, and that's a GOOD thing:
* South Africa, Uruguay, Argentina, South Korea, Germany, Ghana, Netherlands, Paraguay, Côte d'Ivoire, Chile

Performed according to my expectations, and that's a BAD thing:
* Mexico, France, Greece, Algeria, Australia, Italy, Slovakia, Portugal, Honduras, Spain

Impressed me:
* USA, Slovenia, Japan, New Zealand, North Korea, Switzerland

Disappointed me:
* Nigeria, England, Serbia, Denmark, Cameroon, Brazil

I only saw two teams showing up as possible candidates and those were Argentina (in spite of their 1-0) and of course Germany. I'm still waiting for the rest (Brazil, Italy, Netherlands), but I wouldn't expect too many to get up there. Netherlands is almost at the same level as the two I mentioned first, I think. I am not expecting many surprises here.

I’m not shocked about the bad performances of teams like France, Spain and Portugal so far. France was doing very poorly on their road to this World Cup, even losing to China. They also have a relatively old roster. Spain…well, it’s Spain. You know that chances are they are going to underperform when it gets to the important moments; I don’t know if it’s a mindset thing or what, but I just know. They have a very strong domestic league, but it’s full of foreign players, same as England. I think it’s a mistake to consider those National Teams as candidates just because they have such strong leagues as the Liga and the EPL. Look at the top scorers in Spain, for example: weren’t the top three Messi, Higuaín (both Argentine) and Ronaldo?

South Africa and Uruguay will be already playing by the time this is published. I can hardly wait for Argentina’s game tomorrow against South Korea!

Escribo este post rapidito durante mi break de almuerzo de 30 minutos, ahora que la primera ronda de partidos terminó con la victoria de Suiza sobre España, qua algunos llaman sorpresa pero que a mí no me sorprendió). Veamos qué equipos han respondido a sus expectativas, cuáles me impresionaron y cuáles me han decepcionado hasta ahora:

Jugaron de acuerdo a lo que esperaba y eso es BUENO:
* Sudáfrica, Uruguay, Argentina, Corea del Sur, Alemania, Ghana, Holanda, Paraguay, Costa de Marfil, Chile

Jugaron de acuerdo a lo que esperaba y eso es MALO:
* México, Francia, Grecia, Argelia, Australia, Italia, Eslovaquia, Portugal, Honduras, España

Me sorprendieron gratamente:
* USA, Eslovenia, Japón, Nueva Zelandia, República de Corea, Suiza

Me desilusionaron:
* Nigeria, Inglaterra, Serbia, Dinamarca, Camerún, Brasil

Sólo he visto a dos equipos hasta ahora mostrarse como candidatos, y esos fueron Argentina (a pesar de su exiguo 1-0) y por supuesto Alemania. Todavía sigo esperando por el resto (Brasil, Italia, Holanda), pero no espero que muchos se suban a esa candidatura. Holanda está ya casi al mismo nivel de los dos primeros, creo. No espero sorpresas aquí.

No me sorprendí mucho tampoco por las performances tan malas de equipos como Francia, España y Portugal. Francia venía muy mal camino al Mundial y hasta perdió con el limitadísimo equipo Chino. También tienen un plantel relativamente 'viejo'. España... bueno, es España. Uno sabe que hay posibilidades de que 'arruguen' en los momentos importantes; yo no sé si es un problema de mentalidad, pero siempre pasa. Tienen una liga local muy fuerte, pero está llena de extranjeros, lo mismo que en Inglaterra. Creo que es un error pensar que una selección nacional es candidata sólo porque la liga local es tan fuerte como la Liga o la English Premier League. Miren a los goleadores de la Liga Española, por ejemplo: acaso no fueron los tres primeros Messi, Higuaín (ambos argentinos) y Ronaldo?

Sudáfrica y Uruguay ya estarán jugando para cuando esto se publique, dando comienzo a la segunda ronda. No puedo esperar hasta el partido de Argentina mañana contra Corea del Sur!

11:13 - I haven't seen a lot from Angel Di María yet. Had high expectations for this great player.
11:18 - We finally get to see Messi playing for the National Team at the same level he plays for Barcelona
11:20 - More priceless HVA commentary, 15 minutes into the second half: "Finish the game NOW!" "The referee just gave 30 minutes of aggregated time"...
11:23 - Argentina misses the second twice, first in a 4v2 breakaway and then on a shot by Higuaín. Everybody swears.
11:32 - Verón comes off. SIGH!
11:36 - Milito x Higuaín, a predictable sub. I bet Agüero will be going in next, he's Maradona's son-in-law after all :-)
11:43 - Di María came off, which made sense. But by sending Burdisso in, we might have given up on scoring again...
11:46 - The right side of Argentina's defence was open for the Nigerian attack all game. We need to go back to a 4-4-2 against Korea.
11:53 - Final whistle. Argentina wins 1-0.
11:54 - Messi's best game for the albiceleste so far.
11:55 - We're going to go home and change so we come back for England - USA. We're wearing the Argentine jerseys, that wouldn't be smart! :-P

According to my predictions, the following teams were advancing to the Second Round:

Esta es la versión en español de mi primer post para la CBC, en el proyecto ‘Superfan’. Pueden ver la versión en inglés aquí.

Faltan sólo unos días para la Copa del Mundo, y la expectativa es muy alta! El primer partido de Argentina es en sólo dos días, y ya estoy ilusionado con juntarme con mi familia y amigos para sufrir por una hora y cuarenta y cinco minutos (incluyendo el entretiempo).

Es que los Argentinos no 'disfrutamos' mirar los partidos del Mundial, sino que los vivimos como una montaña rusa, saltando del pánico a la alegría, luego a la angustia y finalmente a la celebración cuando se escucha el pitazo final y nuestro equipo gana... bueno, cuando gana! Me imagino lo desolada que va a estar Buenos Aires este sábado por la mañana... va a parecer una ciudad fantasma!

No importa si tengo el asiento más confortable de la casa, lo más probable es que me la pase parándome cada vez que haya una chance para Argentina (como uno haría si estuviera en la tribuna) y seguramente voy a andar caminando en círculos y murmurando cuando las cosas no vayan bien. Voy a gritar, me voy a quejar (mucho), voy a agarrar a un jugador de punto y criticarlo hasta cuando haga las cosas bien y les voy a gritar indicaciones desde el living de mi casa, como si me pudieran escuchar. No es nada fácil jugar en la selección argentina: van a haber sólo 23 jugadores... pero más de cuarenta millones de directores técnicos. Un amigo mío me preguntó si no podía venir a casa a ver los partidos de Argentina; pero en realidad lo que quiere hacer es filmarme mientras yo lo miro, así tiene un video de todas las pavadas que hago!!!

Así y todo, y con tanto sufrimiento a cuestas, no puedo esperar más. Sé que voy a disfrutar muchísimo todo esto. Nada mejor que sentarse (OK, pararse) frente a la TV con mi familia y mis amigos y compartir la pasión por el mejor deporte del mundo. Y qué mejor que hacerlo mientras alentamos juntos a la albiceleste!!

Ya estamos ahí, gente. Ha llegado el momento. Buena suerte para los 32 participantes, y esperemos que esta Copa del Mundo sea tan increíble como promete ser.

Group “H” predictions

Sorry for the delay, I’ve been busy… We’re finally down to the last group of the first round. It looks like an easy one for Spain, but you never know with them. I don’t mean to insult, but I consider Spain as the biggest underachiever in World Cup history. They almost always come as candidates but rarely make it past the second round, with a fourth place (out of 13 teams) at the Brazil World Cup in 1950 being their best result ever. If they don’t suffer from stage freight again, then Spain should make it to the next round in first, probably to meet Portugal in the round of 16.

Once again, this group has a team that doesn’t stand a chance a priori, and in this case we’re talking about Honduras. That leaves Chile and Switzerland to fight for second, and I promise this is going to be nasty!!! I expected Chile to advance, but with striker Suazo injured, its chances have somehow decreased. Still, and out of neighbourly appreciation, I will give them the edge, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they advance due to goal difference.

Heck, I wouldn’t be surprised if all three top teams end tied, and the furia española ends going back home early once again!

Still, this is what I’m going to go with:

Round of 16 and Quarterfinals predictions tomorrow. The World Cup is coming!

Perdonen la demora, he estado ocupado… Por fin llegamos al último grupo de la primera ronda. Este parece ser un grupo fácil para España, pero nunca se sabe con ellos. No quiero ser despectivo, pero considero a España el equipo más decepcionante de la historia de las Copas del Mundo. Casi siempre llegan como candidatos pero rara vez pasan de la segunda ronda, con un cuarto puesto (entre trece equipos) en el Mundial de Brasil en 1950 como mejor resultado. Si no sufren de pánico escénico otra vez, entonces debieran ganar el grupo y pasar a la segunda ronda, para enfrentarse a Portugal en octavos de final.

Una vez más, este grupo tiene un equipo que a priori no tiene ninguna chance, y en este caso hablamos de Honduras. Eso nos deja con Chile y Suiza para definir el segundo puesto, y aquí sí que va a haber batalla!!! Yo esperaba que Chile avanzara con más facilidad, pero la lesión de su estrella y goleador Suazo les disminuyó las chances. De todos modos, y por afinidad regional, le voy a dar la derecha a Chile, pero no me sorprendería que terminen pasando por diferencia de gol o algo así.

Es más, no me sorprendería en lo más mínimo que hubiera un triple empate y la furia española se fuera a casa temprano!

De todos modos, esta es mi predicción:

El miércoles, las predicciones de octavos y cuartos de final. Se viene el Mundial!

Group “G” predictions

Group “G” is where Brazil is. Unlike Argentina, Brazil got a tough group with at least two very strong competitors… in the papers. But in spite of a present that is not that brilliant and the controversy around some of Dunga’s choices when he submitted the list of 23 players (most notably, the exclusion of soccer star Ronaldinho, with a good present in Italy, and who many see as the next breakout star, Neymar, a 19 year old kid who still plays for Santos, where Pelé started), I think that Brazil will win this group. And I also think that the People’s Republic of Korea (that’s its actual name) will end in last. Heck, they’re already satisfied with having made it!

When I first started posting my predictions, I had no doubt that the team was going to come in second was Ivory Coast; Drogba and Touré are at the top of their games, and I couldn’t think of Portugal having what it takes to beat them for the second spot. Plus, Portugal has two big cons: 1) the history of being one of the biggest underachievers in World Cup history (probably second only to Spain) and 2) that they have the entire team revolving around a guy like Cristiano Ronaldo, who’s very good and very pretty (…) but definitely not as big a star as part of the media and many crazy teenagers wants us to believe.

Problem is, now Didier Drogba got injured and is very likely to miss the entire World Cup. That is a huge blow to Ivory Coast’s chances and I think Portugal will take advantage of it. I find amusing that by coming in second, Portugal will very likely have to play against Spain in second round. What are they going to do? They can’t both lose!!!

My predictions:

4)	P.R. of Korea

El Grupo “G” es donde está Brasil. A diferencia de Argentina, los verde amarelhos ligaron un grupo con dos contendentes muy duros… al menos en los papeles. Pero a pesar de un presente que no es extremadamente brillante y la controversia alrededor de las decisiones de Dunga cuando nombró a los 23 jugadores (sobre todo la exclusión de Ronaldinho, de buen presente en Italia y de quien muchos ven como la próxima gran figura del fútbol mundial, Neymar, un muchachito de 19 años que aún juega en el Santos, donde Pelé comenzó), todavía creo que Brasil va a ganar el grupo. También creo que la República Popular de Corea (tal es su verdadero nombre) va a terminar cuarto. Si están más que satisfechos con haber llegado!

Cuando comencé con mis predicciones, no tenía dudas de que el equipo que iba a terminar segundo era Costa de Marfil; Drogba y Touré están en un gran momento, y no creo que Portugal tenga con qué ofrecerles batalla por el segundo puesto. Portugal, además, tiene dos contras: 1) la historia de ser uno de esos equipos que siempre parecen fuertes pero ‘arrugan’ en los Mundiales (solamente detrás de sus vecinos españoles) y 2) que tienen un equipo que sólo gira alrededor de un tipo como Cristiano Ronaldo, que juega muy bien y es muy lindo (…) pero que definitivamente no es una estrella tan grande como muchos medios y toneladas de adolescentes con las hormonas al rojo vivo nos quieren hacer creer.

El problema es que ahora Didier Drogba se lesionó y es casi seguro que se pierde el Mundial. Es un golpe muy grande para los marfileños y sus chances, y creo Portugal va a aprovechar la oportunidad. Será divertido ver esto, porque con el segundo puesto Portugal va a tener que jugar en segunda ronda con España. Qué es lo que van a hacer? No pueden perder los dos!!!

Mi predicción:

The Chelsea curse

My friend Mike posted something today on his Twitter page, reflecting a comment made by recognized Argentine journalist Daniel Arcucci that I liked: there have been two Chelsea players who got injured within the last two days (Drogba and Mikel) and will very likely miss the World Cup (there is still some hope for Drogba, it seems). Not surprisingly, these are the stars of their teams (Ivory Coast and Nigeria, respectively).

But there were more! Before this happened, Bosingwa (Portugal), Essien (Ghana) and Ballack (Germany) also got injured and will miss the World Cup. And they all play for Chelsea as well!

So, a few questions here. Can you answer any for me?

1) Is this a consequence of the very demanding schedule these players have, with their EPL, UEFA and National Team games?

2) Are we talking, like Mike and Daniel said, about a ‘curse’ ? :-)

3) Was Maradona smart not to plan any friendly games while waiting for their first match against Nigeria? (I know, putting Maradona and smart in the same sentence is very close to an oxymoron)

In the meantime, some friendly matches that made me wish I hadn’t posted my predictions for Group “A” and “E” already. Right now, I would choose Uruguay and South Africa to advance for Group “A” and Germany and Cameroon for Group “E”, but it is too late…

Mi amigo Mike puso algo hoy en su Twitter que había publicado el reconocido periodista Daniel Arcucci y que me interesó- hay dos jugadores del Chelsea que se lesionaron en los últimos dos días (Drogba and Mikel) y por lo tanto se van a perder el Mundial (aunque parece que aún hay esperanzas para Drogba). No es sorpresa el hecho de que que ambos sean las figuras de sus equipos (Costa de Marfil y Nigeria, respectivamente) teniendo en cuenta dónde juegan.

Pero no son los únicos! Antes de que esto pasara, Bosingwa (Portugal), Essien (Ghana) y Ballack (Alemania) también tuvieron lesiones que los marginaron del Mundial. Y todos juegan para el Chelsea!

Tengo algunas preguntillas, a ver quién me ayuda con ellas:

1) Será esto una consecuencia directa de un fixture muy exigente, con tantos partidos por la Premier League, UEFA y seleccionados nacionales?

2) Estaremos hablando, como dicen el benemérito y Arcucci, de una maldición? Traigan una bruja! :-)

3) Maradona fue inteligente al no programar amistosos hasta el primer partido con Nigeria? (Ya sé, escribir Maradona e inteligente en la misma oración es un oximorón)

Mientras tanto, los resultados de algunos amistosos me hacen desear no haber publicado los pronósticos del Grupo “A” y el Grupo “B”. En este momento me quedaría con Uruguay y Sud Africa para pasar en el “A” y Alemania y Camerún en el “E”, pero ya es muy tarde…

Group “F” predictions

I am going to type this one very carefully so I don’t screw up like I did in my previous two posts… :-)
This Group “F” is a weird one. You would think that Italy should win it without any problems, but the truth is that Italy is looking very bad these days, and they just lost 1-2 to Mexico yesterday! Still, the same rule that applies to Germany is valid for the azzurri so I wouldn’t expect them to wave good bye after just three games. But I don’t predict they are going to defend the 2006 title for a long time! I would be surprised if this team makes it to quarterfinals… It will all depend on who they are going to play against in the second round. Imagine if they come in second place and have to face Netherlands next!!!

Paraguay is the other top team in my mind. They have a good roster, a good coach and they played good games during the qualifying round. Paraguay always gets the worst possible groups in the draw. I remember France ‘98, they were with Nigeria, Bulgaria and Spain, and they still advanced; it took a lot of effort by eventual winner France to knock them off in second round, but not before Paraguayan goalkeeper gave them the scare of their lives with a free kick that went barely wide. The guaraníes seem to have done better this time, because we know that there’s at least one team that has no chances: New Zealand.

There’s another team there, though, and that’s Slovakia. I can’t really count them as candidates to advance, given their latest performances, which include a defeat at home against Norway and a tie with Cameroon. Before that, they had also scored home losses to Chile, and Slovenia. Still, they managed to win their group and have a big advantage: their first game is against New Zealand, so they could take an early lead with a comfortable win against the kiwis.

I trust Paraguay’s consistency and Italy’s proverbial good luck (and use of their catenaccio) more than I trust Slovakia’s chances, so here’s my forecast:

GROUP “F” STANDINGS

1)	Italy
2)	Paraguay
3)	Slovakia
4)	New Zealand

Group “G” prediction coming on Sunday!

Voy a escribir este con mucho cuidado así no hago lío como en los últimos dos posts... :-)
Este Grupo "F" es raro. Uno pensaría que Italia lo gana fácil, pero la verdad es que Italia está jugando muy mal
últimamente, y hasta acaba de perder con México 2-1! De todos modos, la misma regla que aplica para Alemania sirve
para los azzurri, así que no espero que se tengan que volver para casa luego de sólo tres partidos. Eso sí, no creo que defiendan su título del 2006 por mucho tiempo! Me sorprendería si pasan a cuartos de finales con este equipo... Todo va a depender de con quién se enfrentan en la segunda ronda. Miren si terminan segundos y se tienen que jugar el pase a cuartos contra Holanda!!!

Paraguay es para mí el otro equipo que va a pasar. Estan bien, tienen un buen coach y han jugado buenos partidos tanto de clasificación como preparatorios. Paraguay siempre liga los peores grupos en los sorteos; me acuerdo de Francia '98, en que tuvo a Nigeria, Bulgaria y España como rivales y así y todo pasaron; es más, les dieron un gran trabajo al eventual campeón Francia para eliminarlos, y no antes de que el arquero Chilavert los dejara con el corazón en la boca al mandar un tiro libre apenitas afuera. Los guaraníes parecen haber tenido mejor suerte esta vez, porque sabemos que hay al menos un equipo sin chances: Nueva Zelandia.

Hay otro equipo más, sin embargo, que es Eslovaquia. No los puedo contar como candidatos a progresar, especialmente si uno mira sus últimas performances, que incluyen una derrota de local contra Noruega y un empate con Camerún. Antes de eso también habían perdido en casa contra chile y Eslovenia. Sin embargo ganaron su grupo y tienen una ventaja ahora: su primer partido es contra la selección kiwi, así que podrían tomar la delantera con una victoria cómoda.

De todos modos le tengo más fe a la consistencia paraguaya y a la reconocida buena suerte de los Italianos (y su catenaccio) que a las chances de Eslovaquia, así que aquí está mi pronóstico:

Group “E” predictions

Group “E” features one of the teams that I see as a serious candidate to win this World Cup, and that would be Netherlands. They had a more than impressive performance in the Qualifying Round, as they were the very first team to qualify, back in late 2008. Netherlands has a strong team; there are many stars, but none too big to have the whole team revolving around them (like Messi with Argentina or Kaká with Brazil). I can’t think of any reasons or conditions that would cause Netherlands not to win this group.

Japan is a strong team in the Asian Confederation, but… they’re in the Asian Confederation. In my mind, their chances of going past the First Round are slim to none; that leaves two teams fighting for the second spot: Denmark and Cameroon. In this case, I think Denmark will get the edge, but again, I predict it’s going to be difficult for the Danes!

El Grupo “E” tiene a uno de los equipos que yo veo como serios candidatos a ganar el Mundial, y ese equipo es Holanda. Tuvieron una performance excelente en la Ronda Clasificatoria, que los vio como el primer equipo en clasificarse, a fines del 2008. Holanda tiene un equipo muy fuerte; hay varias estrellas, pero ninguna tan grande como para tener a todo el equipo girando a su alrededor (Como Messi con Argentina o Kaká con Brasil). No se me ocurren razones on condiciones que pudieran causar que los holandeses no ganen este grupo.

Japón es uno de los equipos fuertes de la Confederación Asiática pero… viene de la Confederación Asiática. En mi mente, no tienen casi ninguna chance de pasar a la segunda ronda. Eso deja a dos equipos para pelear por el segundo puesto: Dinamarca y Camerún. Creo que Dinamarca debería pasar, pero va a ser muy difícil para ellos!

Group “D” predictions

Group “D” is where Germany sits, and they normally get easy groups in the World Cup, same as Brazil. It didn’t work for the verde-amarelha this time, so let’s see how did it go for Germany. Mmm… not good either. Serbia can be a tough rival, especially if they don’t crumble under pressure like they did in Germany ‘06 (remember they had conceded just one or two goals during the whole qualifying phase, only to allow six from Argentina in Group stage). If the Serbs toughen up a little, they could give Germany a run for their money and take second place from them… because I have no doubts Ivory Coast is going to win this group.

Germany is a tough competitor, as usual (hey it’s second only to Brazil in my mind); you know that when the World Cup finals are up, it doesn’t really matter how crappy they were playing, they will still go all the way until at least Quarter finals. An early exit for this team is unconceivable… still, they depend way too much on all of their non-German players (Podolski, Klose, Cacau…)

Australia continues to improve, and they did quite well playing in the Asian qualifiers for the first time, after having been forced to go to play offs almost every time when they were with the OFC. Oddly enough, with Australia gone, New Zealand snuck in too; correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe this is the very first time we have two teams from Oceania in a World Cup. Still, the socceroos weren’t that lucky with the draw and won’t progress.

El Grupo “D” es donde aparece Alemania, que normalmente cae en grupos fáciles en la Copa del Mundo, al igual que Brasil. No parece que sea el caso para la verde-amarelha esta vez, así que veamos cómo les fue a los teutones. Mmm… no muy bien. Serbia puede ser un rival muy difícil, sobre todo si no se caen a pedazos por la presión como pasó en Alemania ‘06 (se acuerdan que llegron habiendo recibido uno o dos goles en toda la etapa clasificatoria, y después se ‘comieron’ seis contra Argentina). Si se ponen las pilas, los serbios le pueden dar batalla a Alemania por el segundo puesto… porque no tengo dudas de que este grupo lo gana Costa de Marfil.

Alemania, sin embargo, es un competidor duro, como siempre (para mí están sólo detrás de Brasil en la historia); uno sabe que cuando llega la hora de la Copa del Mundo, no importa qué tan mal venían jugando, van a llegar al menos hasta los cuartos de final. Una salida temprana, como le pasó a Argentina en 2002, es inconcebible… pero de todos modos, no tienen gran cosa y dependen mucho de sus jugadores nacionalizados (Podolski, Klose, Cacau…)

Australia continúa mejorando, y no les fue nada mal jugando las eliminatorias asiáticas por primera vez, luego de haber sido relegados a jugar play-offs casi todas las veces mientras estuvieron en la OFC. Lo curioso es que con Australia fuera, Nueva Zelandia se las arregló para colarse en la copa también, así que creo que esta es la primera Copa del Mundo que tiene dos equipos de Oceanía. De todos modos los socceroos  no tuvieron mucha suerte que digamos con el fixture y no van a avanzar.
