I see Group “C” as weaker than most of the rest. England is the natural candidate here, and they should make it all the way to at least the quarterfinals, but… they’re playing horribly. Just this past weekend, they salvaged a game against lowly Japan, coming from a 0-1 deficit to win 2-1 thanks to two own goals (the first one was amazing, you should watch it). With a slightly decimated roster and a couple of bad games on route to this World Cup, but with history and prestige behind them, England should win this group. But I don’t think they will get three wins, though. I would predict a 2-0-1 (6 points) or a 1-2-0 (5 points).
I don’t think Algeria has a chance to advance here, so that leaves two teams: Slovenia and United States. I think about the US team the same that I said about Mexico: they’re lucky to make it to every cup lately because they don’t have any serious competition in their continent. But unlike Mexico, United States has impressed in his recent matches, and they seem to be in top form. That should be enough to beat Slovenia (who’s making their first participation in a World Cup) to the second spot, but only by a nose.
It’s odd how FIFA does the draws for the World Cup. They have a thousand different rules that sometimes exclude each other, and that’s why you end with groups where you have four teams of comparable power (like Group “A”), or groups where there is a team that is clearly unopposed (like Spain in Group “H”). You know that Brazil and Italy will normally get comfortable groups (though it doesn’t look like that for Brazil this time) and for whatever reason, Paraguay always gets screwed!
My predictions, then:

Me parece que el Grupo “C” es bastante más flojito que la mayoría del resto. Inglaterra es el candidato natural aquí, y debieran llegar al menos hasta cuartos de final, pero... estan jugando de manera espantosa. Este fin de semana que pasó, salvaron un partido contra Japón, en el que perdían 0-1 y lograron revertirlo y ganar 2-1, gracias a dos goles en contra (el primero es una preciosura, deberían verlo). Con un plantel ligeramente afectado por lesiones y con una serie de malos partidos camino al Mundial, pero con la historia y el prestigio de su lado, Inglaterra debería ganar el grupo. Pero no pienso que se lleven tres victorias; predigo un 2-0-1 (6 puntos) o un 1-2-0 (5 puntos).
No creo que Argelia tenga chances, así que esto me deja con dos equipos para pelear por el segundo puesto: Eslovenia y Estados Unidos. Pienso sobre USA lo mismo que dije sobre México: tienen mucha suerte de entrar a todas las Copas últimamente, porque no tienen ninguna competencia real en su continente. Pero a diferencia de México, Estados Unidos tuvo un par de partidos de preparación en los que se mostró en muy buena forma. Eso debería ser suficiente para vencer a la debutante Eslovenia por el segundo puesto, pero le van a ganar 'por una cabeza'.
Es raro ver cómo la FIFA organiza los sorteos de grupos para los mundiales. Tienen miles de reglas que a veces se contradicen entre ellas, y es así que terminamos con grupos donde tenemos cuatro equipos de poder similar (como el Grupo “A”), o grupos donde hay un equipo que aparece claramente beneficiado y sin oposición (como España en el Grupo “H”). Brasil e Italia siempre parecen ligar grupos fáciles (aunque no parece que sea así para los brasileños esta vez) y por la razón que sea, a Paraguay siempre lo perjudican!
