Heroic

The action comes from last weekend’s Mexican League final game, between Club America and Cruz Azul. America had lost the first leg 1-0, and things weren’t looking good for the home team in the second game, as they were down 0-1 in 20’, and with 10 men thanks to an early red card.

 

With just a minute to go, Mosquera tied the game for America and gave the team a very, very faint hope. There were only, let’s say, two or three minutes left. The home team got a corner kick, and that was definitely going to be the last play of the match. Keeper Moises Muñoz (who not long ago had barely saved his life after a bad car accident) decided to go for it… and this happened:

 

 

America then went on to win the match (and hence its 11th title) on shootout (with Muñoz stopping a shot himself).

América había perdido el primer partido 1-0, y las cosas no lucían muy bien para el local en el segundo encuentro, porque ya iban 0-1 en 20’ y con 10 hombres gracias a una tarjeta roja tempranera.

 

Con sólo un minuto para terminar, Mosquera empató el partido para el América y le dio un poquito, poquitísimo de esperanza al equipo. Quedaban apenas tres minutos. Los locales consiguieron un tiro de esquina, y era obvio que esa sería la última jugada del partido. El arquero Moises Muñoz (que no hace mucho había salvado su vida de milagro luego de un accidente de auto) decidió ir a buscar el gol heroico, y esto sucedió:

Ouch!

Lukasz Piszczek is a Polish man who plays for Borussia Dortmund as a right defender, having played for his National team as well. During last weekend’s game against Hannover, and with the game 1-1, Piszczek made a heroic save when they were in aggregated time already.

But at what cost… you just watch.

Lukasz Piszczek es un jugador polaco que se desempeña en el Borussia Dortmund como lateral derecho, habiendo jugado ya para la selección de su país. Durante un partido del fin de semana pasado contra el Hannover, y con el partido 1-1, Piszczek tuvo una tapada heroica cuando ya estaban en tiempo suplementario y no quedaba nada que hacer.

This is from a game between Flamengo and Vasco Da Gama, both teams from Rio (Brazil). Deivid (Flamengo) found himself with the ball, 1 yard away from the net and… well, you just gotta see it.

The TV commentator just kills me. Man, I miss those guys! :-)

Esto es de un partido reciente entre el Flamengo y el Vasco da Gama, ambos equipos cariocas (de Río de Janeiro). Deivid (Flamengo) se encuentra sólo con la pelota, a un metro de la línea de gol de un arco desguarnecido y… bueno, hay que ver para creer.

El tipo de la tele me mata. Cómo extraño esos relatos! :-)

It literally ‘hit the post’!!!

Watch this scene from Argentina’s “Torneo Argentino C” (something like our fifth division). San Lorenzo of Sáenz Peña (Province of Chaco) was playing against Libertad of Charata (also from Chaco). The game was 3-1 for the visiting Libertad, when forward Walter Gorosito found himself in front of the keeper. He took a shot, that hit the crossbar and went up.

The ball hit the branches of a tree near the field and fell back in the eighteen yards. Defender Marcelo Escobar took it and put it on the ground to take the corresponding goal kick.

But referee Juan Mancuello had followed the ball and interpreted that it had never gone past the goal line so the ball was still in play. He called for a  penalty kick!!! There was no way San Lorenzo players could make him change his mind.

Matías Flores took the PK and put the 4-1 for Libertad. The game ended 5-2 but who cares, right. That fourth goal was worth the admission price!!! :-)

Miren esta escena del Torneo Argentino C de Argentina (algo así como nuestra quinta división). San Lorenzo of Sáenz Peña (Provincia de Chaco) jugaba contra Libertad of Charata (también de Chaco). El partido iba 3-1 para la visita Libertad, cuando el delantero Walter Gorosito se encontró delante del arquero y sacó un furibundo disparo que se estrelló contra el travesaño y salió para arriba.

La pelota dio contra las ramas de un árbol cerca de la cancha y volvió a caer en el área. El defensor Marcelo Escobar la tomó y la puso en su lugar para efectuar el correspondiente saque de arco…

Pero el referí Mancuello había seguido la jugada e interpretó que la pelota nunca había salido, por lo que aún estaba en juego. Por lo tanto, dio penal para Libertad!!! No hubo forma de que los jugadores de San Lorenzo lo hicieran cambiar de opinión.

Matías Flores ejecutó el penal y puso el 4-1 para Libertad. El partido terminó 5-2, pero a quién le importa, no? Ese cuarto gol justificó el precio de la entrada!!! :-)
